What is that little light above the rearview mirror for?

With due relavance to this thread, although the lighting technology is new, the concept is not. I remember back when I had a 1973 Super Beetle and it had the heater control levers between the front seats. The dash had an tiny "eyeball" projector beam next to the ashtray toward the bottom of the dash that focused a comfortable glow on the heater control levers in similar fashion to the LED light for waterfall functions in the HHR. It was a welcome reconnection for me when I discovered it in my '08 HHR. I liked it back then and I welcome it now.

I had a 1971 Corolla that had a light in the dash overhang that glowed a bit over the controls below, as well as the stick shift, and could be intensified by flipping a cover down. Once flipped down, the light would be more direct and bright, but still was a bit general, as it would reflect off a mirrored surface inside of the flip down surfact. It was close in concept, though.

Not just an HHR thing. Many newer GM vehicles have it. It is amber in the wife's Outlook.

Question Mine doesn't work

My little light stopped working. It's not a huge loss, but I would like to fix it. Anyone know how? I took it apart and it appears to be hard wired to the bulb.
Thanks!
