What sold you on the HHR?
I had never heard of the HHR before the day I bought mine.......
I needed a new car, been thinking about it all year. Cash For Clunkers was too appealing for me to resist. First I looked at an Ford Escape, would have had to buy a manual tranny to qualify, plus it drove too much like a truck than a car. Would have looked at Hyundai but they were too busy to help me in a timely fashion. I pulled into the Chevy dealer just to see what type of crossovers they had, saw a HHR SS and that caught my attention.
I was steered to my HHR by the salesman, he thought that after 12 years of driving a BMW that the 2LT model would fit my preferences more than a 1LS or 1LT model. I liked the way it drove a lot more than the Escape and six hours later the 2LT was mine....

July 4th weekend 2008 and gas was around $4 per gal. I had a 22 year old 1986 T-Bird, 5 speed, 4 cyl TurboCoupe which I had bought new and had been bulletproof that had a good combination of power and economy. When I saw that the HHR SS had a similar setup plus even better fuel economy I felt it was time to act. Of course I liked the looks of the car and the 0% financing helped also.
I bought HHRvey new in '06 and was impressed with its cool, retro look, but moreso than that I was thrilled with the pick up, smooth ride, and all of the standard equipment that came with it as well. Back in '06 when there weren't that many HHR's, folks would roll down their windows and ask me, "what is that?" Many could tell it wasnt a PT. Others would smile in the next lane and give me a thumbs up. It was so fun having an HHR in the early days because people truly did not know what to make of them. Older folks said it reminded them of the cars they drove in high school back in the 50's or early 60's. One senior citizen, a total stranger, asked the store I was shopping in to page"the owner of the silver car in front of the store." Of course my first thought was, "Oh no. Somebody hit HHRvey." As it turned out, the lady was so excited to see my car, she just wanted to look inside of it! True story!
HHRvey has been a wonderful, reliable car, fun to drive, and great MPG. The only thing I didnt care for is the fact the window switches are on the console. But you know, those switches have grown on me over the years, and now I appreciate them for what the designers had in mind.
I am saddened the HHR's are being phased out.
So I am going to hang on to HHRvey for several more years, and hope I get the same enjoyment from my new car when I trade him for an Equinox.
I didn't have time to read all the responses yet... but mine:
I ONLY started looking due to Cash for Clunkers and knew the HHR would be the FIRST consideration for me, with the Equinox being next. I'd only really seen 1 or 2 HHR SS's at a glance and once I got up close to it was in awe! I have 2 kids and I'm a drummer, so this thing fits my needs VERY well with hauling whatever and has the sportiness that I crave with all my vehicles.

Biggest reason was the $3500 in rebate's!!!
Also I needed a car with space for work that got good mileage. So far I have had no problems with it. (knock on wood) You can see by the Mod's I have done that I'm enjoying the car.

I rented a lot of cars in the last few years, and put 2,000 miles on each. The one I really liked was a Cobalt, so I swore when my old car finally was done I'd go and buy a Cobalt. The only thing I didn't like was the styling and the driver's seat. I like the look of the HHR, but thought they were way more expensive. I went to the dealer, sat in one, and fell in love. I shopped a lot online and found an '09 white 2LT with 13k miles. It now lives in my driveway. My son named it "Elvis". It wasn't any more expensive than Cobalts with the same options. Now if I can just find a set of Mooneye Speed Master kidney-bean wheels used..... God Bless, Marc
I wanted something more suitable for carrying three big dogs, able to carry passengers, was fun to drive, and was still good on gas. The HHR fit that bill perfectly, and GM's making the HHR a flex fuel vehicle was an awesome bonus. Having an awesome dealership to work with helped seal the deal.
I first saw an HHR at the Chevy display at the 2005 Woodward Dream Cruise and thought it was a pretty cool car.It suited my desire for a small wagon and best of all it could be had with a stick shift. So when my 97 Audi A6 was deemed terminal I narrowed my choices down to one of the foreign car lines sold at the dealership where I work or another GM vehicle(since one of the cars we sell is Buick).Nothing at Nissan interested me,manual trans availabilty in a decent car was non existant at Kia,Acura was WAY over budget, and the only Hondas that were even close to my needs were a Fit and an Element. The Fit was just too slow for my taste, the Element too boxy.So that left GM cars.Stick shift availability quickly narrowed my choices down to a Cobalt sedan or an HHR.Since I have to occasionally carry my Mom's wheelchair around, the hatch was easier to deal with than the Cobalt's trunk(even though it WOULD have fit into the Cobalt trunk.I had prior experience with an oversize chair and a Kia Rio.THAT was no fun-but it did fit!).I just wish the HHR was lighter. The 275 extra pounds in the HHR takes it's toll on acceleration.
