It's possible that the act of disconnecting the BCM, effectively resetting it, and not cleaning it, fixed the problem.
Bad electrical connections can cause transients that cause havoc with solid state electronics. The ignition switch might have had something to do with it. Twisting stranded wire together does not make for a good connection. I might suggest, instead of just taping, solder that white wire, or at least put a wire nut on it, and also explore what's under the red tape.
