I don't see how the 5 spd gets around the issue. Some have the issue and some don't so maybe the 5 spd cars idle higher when cold started and thus gets the vacuum built up faster.

No 5 speeders have complained up here with this issue? Just curious.

7m34life Every morning brakes suck, took to dealership and they reprogrammed brake controller on monday and its going back next monday for the same problem. Its my wifes car and she's always got my 2yr old boy and 4m old girl with her. Kinda ticks me off about it. Its scary when you back down our steep ass driveway and the pedal hits the floor.
Like others have said It's a vacuum issue. Watch the boost gage and move the car once vacuum climbs. My wife drives the car mostly and is trained to avoid the hard pedal.

People say pedal to the floor when in reality the pedal is Hard to push w/o the booster being evacuated.

At one point are we wasting a lot of gas idling just to "fix" the brake problem?

not really....I never just start a car right up and take off.....its habbit that no matter what car i drive I always give it a min or two on cold start ups just to let the oil and fluids flowin...now if its not a cold start, different story...

Yeah, I haven't experienced any "cold" starts until now, since I've only had the SS since July. I am loving the remote start.

I noticed I am the only crazy person that shuts down their engine when sitting in a drive through. Especially at the bank!

I let it idle for a minute or so but my wife backs the car out of the garage and then goes in the house and gets the kids in the car. So its actually idling several minutes before she leaves and we still have the problem.

Regardless of how long it idles, it shouldn't be a problem.

Us 5-speed guys will never see this issue, at idle cold ours are never "loaded" against a torque converter. However........my GM LS1 powered '35 Ford has this exact problem......when it is cold and you put it in gear you need both feet to stop it!!

I understand it....I compensate for it, I let the car idle for a bit until the idle drops down, then I have vacuum to help stop the car. I guess if I didn't have four-wheel discs on it, it might be different. Maybe I'll see what this vacuum pump kit looks like for the auto trans HHR......I might end up with one on my old hot rod.

I can produce the issue at will. When I first ran into it, I went "flying" over a speed bump at work that I thought I was stopping for. Now that I know what it is, I just let the car idle about 30 additional seconds before driving it. I want it fixed, and it's not safe if you don't wait for vacuum to build... but it is managable.

Oh, and mine is indeed a 5 speed.
