Brakes are shot

2008 HHR SS manual with 27,500 miles and the brake pads need replaced. Fronts started making grinding noise a couple of days ago and I had a mechanic put it on the rack. Fronts all but gone and rears have about 10% left.

Is this typical as I have never replaced brake pads this soon? FYI - I do a lot of city driving.

I am a highway guy with 37K and not a squeak yet, but starting to wonder when they will fry... I think I'll be lucky to hit 45K. Typically city driving is tougher on them though.

If all of them are worn then it's not mechanical. Appears you use them a bit more than what is typical.

I have 39K miles on mine and they have aprox. 50% left! I would say it is due to all your city driving. I drive primarily highway of course...

In a way I wish mine would wear out so I can relpace them with something less brake dust. I'd like to cross drill the rear rotors and replace the fronts with something higher performance at the same time. Next summer maybe?

I have seen hard driving habits take pads in the 20K mile range average driving will get you into the 30K and 40K range. Highway will see 40K or more.

Also if you live in a flat area or mountains can effect this too.

There are some cars that get much better brake life but that has to do with their brake system. My GTP got nearly 70K in city driving but it has an Bosh electonically balanced system few cars in the HHR range have. It is the only car I ever saw that many miles out of front brakes.

I too just had to replace my Fronts at 29,xxx. The backs were still OK. And most of my mileage is Highway.

Just picked it up - all 4 replaced for $303. I'll keep an eye on the brake dust issue.

2004 ford fivehundred

The wifes car, it costs about 24,000 dollars new and the rear brakes went metal to metal at 23,000 miles. She only drives 12 miles round trip to work with two stoplights in between home and work. Crap brakes for a car that cost that much if you ask me.
