You say you are safe?? How safe are you and how much control do you have of the Car with the clutch in all the time!! Coasting all the time that is just silly!! turning the engine off?? why don't you buy a Prius??
I gave up a 42 MPG VW TDI turbo Diesel to get my HHR SS and with that car I could get better Fuel mileage by accident than you ever got with the HHR SS on Purpose!! My wifes 1996 VW Passat TDI gets 46 MPG in town and 54 MPG on the Highway.........
I am thrilled with my HHR SS and it does everything I expected it to do and if I want to Hypermile I take the wifes Diesel!!
Well i thnk 5 or more psi in the city is assinine, why speed to a red light?
That's all I'm saying. I watch all sorts of sports cars, speed around in the city just to end up sitting next to me 1-2 miles down the road. LOL, silly, very silly.

I'm glad to hear. Many with 2.4's complain about mileage, do you have a manual? What is your driving style and speed?

That is why your guys mileage is so bad.

Dont be offended by my laughter, I know that you are having "more sprited fun" in the city then I am, and more power (or gas) to ya.

I just always shift 1-3-5, in 5th by the time im at 28-30 mph in the flats. My boost gauge never gets close to positive territory in the city, unless i am chasing/running from something. I have my clucth to the floor it seems like 99% of the time. I essentially coast through cities, just enough gas (under 0 psi) to get 'er going and neutral coast to the next f^&% red light. If the light is long I will sometimes ice-off coast. It helps to hear the radio clearer. Were talking avg speed 22mph type of city.

I know that you all do not want to drive like me, and I want you all to drive however you want

A manual SS gets fantastic mileage in the city, and has teh punch to make any "orange light" i ever wanted. What more could you ask for??
I am happy with my mileage. I drive 60% highway/40% city and I have averaged between 24.5 - 26.5. For whatever reason my last tank were my car has turned over 6,000, I averaged between 27.2 and 28.2 mpg. I always use 93 octane and above and usually put my foot to the floor in 2nd gear a couple times a day. G.B.

BTW all you get in a '96 tdi is 42 and 54???
LOL, your barely making up the price of diesel, you need to get at least 54 in the city and 60+ on the highway to really save any fuel for such a slow car? You can pick them up cheap now though....look out for the repair costs. Why did you "give" yours up anyway.

LOL......I am a Charter member of www.TDIClub.com I stated before I am not and will not be a HYPERMILER it is stupid and Dangerous to drive like "You Folks" do and I will not!! I do all my own work on my TDI's and they really are not that hard to work on.........Unfortunately most VW Techs do not have a clue and a lot of TDI's have been destroyed by VW TECH's and then the the "Stealer try's to blame it on the car owner........a very bad situation!
By the way Diesel used to be less that Unleaded regular not to long ago..........And FYI every one of my TDI's have been Chip tuned and are not slow as you say!!
I "gave Mine up" because now I can carry my 150 dog around Haul stuff to the dump and others things I couldn't do with my Jetta! I like the HHR but if VW comes up with a Comparable Vehicle someday soon I will buy it and go back.........
and Yes we have guys in the TDIClub that Hyper mile and have gotten 60-70 MPG + out of there cars yes it is possible!!
That said I am happy with my mileage if I want more I will drive accordingly!!

FYI.......If you think you can by a TDI for cheap you need to check prices........
I sold my 2006 for 2000 more than I paid for my 2008 HHR SS

Well being able to "do your own work" is a big bonus.I figure you boosted your tough little diesel. Of course its possible to get that kinda mileage, Its easy actually. its cool if YOU don't want to hypermile, and i'll tell you what I tell everyone else. Do what YOU want with YOU hhr, and more power to ya.

But to call me stupid and dangerous is MORE than a little out of line.

Or do you really believe that?

I mean...... if you can't drive your car safely AND efficiently, YOU should not hypermile. For some of us....it's just not that difficult. Maybe you need more practice.

I forgot to compliment you on this line. My internet connection is crap in this building, so i didnt finish what I was saying.

Most of my apatment mates down here figure that if its not either German, expensive, or both, that it's not worth driving. Glad you... and I ....can agree ....to disagree ......with them.

My city mileage has never been under 20 mpg, and does about 29 highway with cruise set at 70. No premimum fuel for me, it runs fine on 87 octane. Mileage greatly depends on your personal driving habits.
