Competition Mode/Launch Control

Competition Mode/Launch Control
I have an SS with an automatic transmission.
What does the traction control functions of the Competition Mode/Launch Control do when in this mode?
Is this for Straight line competition, or does it have some corner handling effect?
The owners manual is vague to me about what is going on and how it works.

In competition mode it turns off the traction control and allows the ESC (electronic stability control) to remain active, although I think the ESC is in some sort of limited mode.
If the tires traction breaks loose (or you just want to smoke 'em ) competition mode allows that.

It feels like it has less Torque Steer when in the Launch Control Mode.
I have a lot of round-a-bouts in my town, and it seems to handle the twisties a little better (maybe just placebo effect??)

If this question is for speedwagen, that picture is of a Bonneville car, not his.
