As was stated earlier, the SS has two fuel pumps. My high pressure mechanical pump quit while I was on the interstate going to work at 3:30AM.
The DIC said reduced engine power. They aren't kidding when it says that. I managed to limp it to work 35 miles more. It wasn't fun. I never ran it out of fuel. Just a mechanical failure.

i didnt say that they were all ***** but like someone else said in the thread chevy is known for the fuel pump problem the only way to try to minimize the problem is to keep at least a half of tank of gas at all times. because the fuel pump then stays covered with fuel and stays cool and doesnt burn up!!!! at least thats what i heard!!!!!!

Ages ago the fuel floats and some seals got eaten up by the fuel. The rubber composite would not handle the fuel and deteriorate. That has been redesigned many moons ago. Remember when you could run out of fuel and park with your girlfriend. Now the damn things are getting too much mileage too run out of gas.

So, essentially, you "heard" something that you are now using to generalize your experience with your HHR as indicative of a problem with every HHR on the road.

I guess my car having a wiper switch replaced at 69k means that every HHR ever made is going to need a new wiper switch at 69k.

The advice to avoid running to empty so that your fuel pump doesn't overheat and fail is important for almost all makes. That issue is one of the reason for the "low fuel" dummy lights in all makes so people will fill it up before killing their fuel pump.

Anything mechanical can fail.
I had the same problem. Pump died at 2k or so.

To jump in here,my 2LT 07 HHR went 31,000 miles before trade in last week (for a new black 09 HHR-SS!)with absolute 0 problems.I also am a Parts Manager for a Chevy dealer and I can tell you that HHR and HHR/SS are never in the shop for anything more than routine maintenance. There were a few times where struts were done on a few but nothing serious. Also, just so you know GM has had problems with fuel pumps for years, some models more than others obviously, but the new trucks 07-09 Tahoes,Subs,Silverados......whew...watch out because THOSE trucks have fuel pump problems.
