GM Stage1 Longterm questions.
Hi,
So I know that it's human nature for people to post when something goes horribly wrong. Conversely, that when everything is working as it should, we just enjoy the success and don't go out of our way to gush about it.
It is my understanding that early adopters of the GM stage 1 Kit had tons of issues with the crimp connectors. It was a bad design, and Gm changed it to a plug-in harness.
Here are my questions:
1.) Are people here having good luck with the updated harness?
2.) Does anyone that has had the GM system installed for a long period (1year or more), have any input on it's long term usefulness or continuing issues?
3.) Overall do you feel it was worth the cost and effort and would you do it again?
*PLEASE* don't post about how far SUPERIOR your trifecta, Hahn, BSR, or Bubba Bo Bob's Backyard tune is to the GM system. I agree there is more than one way to skin a cat, and that some of these ways might be better. The thing is, I have a very low mileage (under 17k) 2009 HHR SS 5spd/performance PKG, with the powertrain warranty still intact. I'd like to keep it that way as long as I can.
Thanks for any information you can give!

I just turned off the Trifecta. To drive it with the stg-1, ran great, boosting a little over 20. The old harness is working fine. My dealer did what it needs to stay working. Yours being an 5 spd, you wont get a whole lot more power, 30 hp or so, mine was auto, so it bumped me 60hp, and made it a whole different car. You will have to see what the 5spd guy's have to say.
Oh I had mine included with the sale, had it 1.5 years, 40,000 miles so far.
Ps. Does Bubba Bo Bob's Backyard tune get good reviews, I like the name, kinda catchy !!

Mine has been installed for about 2.5 years and over 40k miles and it's still working as good as day one with no issues. I was aware of the crimp connection problems going in and advised the GM tech so he could take care when installing them and do something that would work for the long haul and so far it looks like he succeeded.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat, it made my car a true SS.

Have had mine for about a year and no issues. Also went in knowing about the issues and addressed them with the tech doing the work. I'm not "on it" much so don't know if I would spend the extra money for it again or not.
I have had the gm tune for over a year now and have had no problems (I have the crimped wires). I would suggest interviewing a few dealers to find out which one has more experience with the upgrade. I wanted to keep my warranty intact (glad i did..had a leaking timing cover gasket replaced at 10,400) and still have fun so I went the GM route..No complaints. I added a catless downpipe and am loving the added power since the GM tune unlocks some of the stock restrictions or "learn down" allowing gains with bolt ons.
Just around 2 years, just under 40,000 miles and no issues with crimped connectors. Something that may have helped me is the new mounts. I would suspect that keeping the motor from rocking has saved the wiring.
Miltown SS, I'd love to put on a Catless downpipe. However, I live in the People's Republik of Kommiefornia and we have the strictest smog testing and inspection laws in the country.
Not only does the car need to pass the emissions test, but there is a visual inspection of the engine including the intake and full exhaust system. If the parts aren't stock, and you don't have a C.A.R.B. (California Air Resources Board) exemption sticker, your car fails and you don't get a new registration sticker.
*AND* If you fail one test your car instantly goes from needing to be inspected every 2 years, to needing an annual inspection for 5 straight years. The test and paperwork can cost between $80-$150 each time.
Yay California! Land of the formerly free!
