My SS has a blown Turbo Coolant By-pass.

And the question is: What is a Turbo Coolant By-pass?

I tried to ask the service writer, but he said it was the by-pass for the turbo coolant. Not really a great explaination of what it is, at least for me.

Apparnetly this part is not available so they are pulling one off the assembly line and it is going to be Monday the soonet but probably fixed on Tuesday. When I took the car in for the coolant system I also had the GM Stage kit installed as well. So with the car being incapacitated I wont be testing the Stage kit anytime soon.

Also I am guessing that this Turbo coolant by-pass is a rather important part since the dealer told me they could not in good faith release the car to me and that it was unsafe to drive.

So Please any of you engine experts chime in and let me know what this part does and why it would be such a bad thing to drive the car with this part broken. BTW: I am not complaining since the dealer hooked me up with a 09 HHR LT as a rental. I am just curious.

08 SS 2000 miles on it.

I have never head it called a bypass line. I'm guessing thay are changing the coolant supply to the turbo or the return line from the turbo. engine coolant is run to the turbo to remove exhaust heat from the turbo. this is why turbo cars get heat so mush faster in cold weather.

Number 2 in the picture is a coolant return pipe for the turbo. Don't know what a bypass hose would be.
