"new" GMTU kit question
"new" GMTU kit question
Just received my GMTU kit from CrateEngineDepot. Got the one with the new plug in harness'. The question is: How much should the dealer take off on the labor charge since there won't be any splicing involved. I bet their labor guide book is still showing a labor time based on the old install time with splicing. Ya'll tell me what your opinion is. Thanks.
they should charge you their regular hourly rate. the time it would take to unplug the harnesses, unscrew the sensors, swap in the new ones, screw them back in, plug in the harnesses, and reflash the ecu to the gms1 file.............30 minutes labor....tops
My regular dealer said it was 1.0 hr minimum just for the reflash. The service manager and parts manager were unfamiliar with the new wire harness plugs so the weren't sure about the rest of the labor charge.
Just getting opinions from you all. I'll be checking with some other dealers in the mean time.

A little update. My regular dealer said his book shows 2 hrs labor for the install. I tried to explain that was the rate for when splicing is needed. His book still shows a picture of the kit with the splice connectors. He(service manager)had not heard of the new plug-in harness that is available. I then showed him the harness supplied with the kit. He also said that they had not done an upgrade before but were willing to try. AND he said they would charge 2 hrs cuz thats what the book says.
Went by the 3 other dealers in the area. One said they didn't want to try it. The other 2 said "Whats a turbo upgrade kit?"
So that leads me to today. Riding around with the GMTU box sitting on the front seat. Not really sure which way to go with this. I'm a little leary of being the test subject for the dealer. What do y'all think?

if you are the slowest working tech alive it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to put the plug n play sensors in. like i said above tell em you will pay for the actual labor...not what the book says.
I was a Service Advisor at a Lexus store and the "book time" is what they charge no matter how long it takes. The dealer I took mine to for the GMTU had not done one before either but were a "GM Performance" dealer so I figured I'd let them try. The tech did a fine job but it took him much longer than two hours. That's how a dealership works. It's often called "warranty time" and a tech is never happy with it because it's on them to do the job in the time allotted. Probably has a hand in why sometimes dealers get a bad rap for poor work or not being able to fix something because the tech doesn't want to take the time to diagnose the problem and will just swap something out and hope not to see the car again.
