SS Hood Insulation Question
I doubt it would trap the heat by lining the hood, but again this would probably be something we would need to see in a wind tunnel to see how the air flows past the engine bay. I also seriously doubt any hood for any car would cause any more heat soak, while driving, then the engine already produces. Now if your standing still and want to cool the system then just open the hood. Also Intercoolers don't work harder as all they are only big radiators. No mechanical parts and since they sit before the entire engine bay they also will have zero effect from heat soak as long as the car is not sitting still.
Not having a vast knowledge of Turbos (or anything for that matter
),
my question is; the colder the air gets through the intercooler, would be more likely to produce more power, correct? If that is the case, if there was something else added to the intercooler area to cool the air even more so, then you would really see an increase in power? The reason being, a friend had mentioned some type of device that was out years ago, which cools the air through the intercooler, with nothing needed to do to the engine. He is in the process of getting me this info. Just found it interesting

If noise is more important than performance, go for it. However, if you don't mind sounding like a delivery truck at idle, you'll be better off without the extra 40# under the hood. Or... if you're like me, you could stand to lose 40# yourself, which would mean you could have both

Good point. I was thinking in terms of the Dynamat-style hood liner products... butyl rubber and tar paper layering, not the fuzzy fiberglass one that GM has been stuffing under hoods for decades. I guess this means I can have another snack as well.
Does anyone know that the GM hoodliner is made so that if there is an engine fire, the tabs quickly melt off, and the therory is, that the hoodliner will fall off the hood and help to smother the fire out? Just a tidbit I thought I would add to this thread.
fan test tongiht....
I was kind of surprised that the fans do not continue running for a while after you shut off the motor. A lot of cars will do this to reduce heat soak (including our BMW), and I would think the turbo would benefit from this. It is 100 deg here right now, so can't say that it hasn't been hot enough to activate it.
further testing is needed......
Some people spray the intercooler with alcohol and another common method is Nitrous which works really well. Water will work but not to the degree of the others. Ive seen people at race tracks spary the Intercooler with Alcohol in a spray bottle before each pass. A really big new front mount intercooler will even make a big difference. Im sure theyll be on the market for the SS soon if not already.
one guy with an SS is going to try it, should be interesting to say the least
P.S. the only stupid question is one not asked...
