The tube can only go on one way; there is a tab & groove.

the front guide does break and the front guide upper bolt works loose , so replace the guides and that upper bolt.
Appreciate the advice.

No. I'm not gonna lie, I'm afraid LOL. If you saw my shop you would crack up. I have a '62 Impala SS breathin Nitrous full chassis I built plus others. These newer cars suck!!! Rebuilt whole front end (worn out). I did the intermediate shaft last week..OK fine. A day later a slight vibration on acceleration... .motor mount now. This car is babied to death too. (wifes car) Just got turbo Tech one MM today! Happy Memorial day in the garage to me Geeeezzzzz. Now the timing chain I draw the line at!!!LOL I'd rather pay and watch or just pay as long as done right. With ALL replacement parts. There is just nobody I would trust in this area (tired of re-fixing everyone's car for them) and I mean nobody that I know that is. Even the simplest of jobs. You should see a pic of my wifes rims after tire install by Firestone on Belmont avenue Youngstown. what a mess!! So if you can, or know someone that knows what a good complete job is please let me know. Thanks Turboss

With that SS , and you can turn wrenches , just do it yourself. Change the timing and balance shaft chains and the water pump if you want and after 3 or 4 hours you’ll be done!

You might as well do the motor mount when you do the chains. It needs to come out anyway.

I also used the 2 no-sprocket Cloyes kits on my SS. When we did the job, we found the front guide to be broken as expected, but also the balance tensioner wasn’t working correctly. The was zero chain stretch as far as I could tell. Probably could have changed the guide and tensioner and got away with it.

I’m not completely sold on the guide bolt replacement by Dorman et. al., but I used it.

BTW, both camshaft sprockets (with the phasers) need to come off to R&R the chain. The bolts are torque-to-yield and are supposed to be discarded and replaced. I re-used the valve cover casket but bought a new engine cover gasket (which happened to be kitted with a shaft seal) because fixing a leak there would be a major pain.

I'm planning on doing the timing chain on my two HHR's. I'm also doing this as preventative maintenance. Ive searched around the forums and have some questions.

2008 HHR SS with about 140,000 miles - I was looking at the Cloyes kits, and there is one that comes with a water-pump 9-4201SAWP ( https://www.cloyes.com/part-finder-s...gine=L4%202.0L ). Is it a good idea to change the water pump while doing the timing chain? Is this kit good ?
Would using the 9-4201SX ( https://www.cloyes.com/part-finder-s...gine=L4%202.0L ) and adding on a OEM water pump be a better idea ? ( https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...t=2208&jsn=996 or https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...t=2208&jsn=994 ? )

2007 HHR LT 2.4 L with 190,000 miles - I have the same questions as above. Is the 9-4201SX Colyes kit sufficient ? Is it a better idea to get the kit with the pump (9-4201SAWP) ?

Where can I find the "good" motor mounts if I was to replace those ?

Thanks in advance.

The Cloyes kit with the water pump works out approximately $80.00 less then ordering separately.
Do not use the sprockets for the balance or timing chains at the crankshaft on the 2.0 SS , instead reuse the OEM sprockets.
