Transaxle different in the 2.0 turbo vs 2.4
What transaxle does the 2.4 model use? I currently have 115,000 miles on my 2.4 and when (if it ever does) blow up, I might throw in a 2.0 turbo engine (ss model). Has anyone does this? What manual and automatic transaxle do GM use on the HHR? I have Googled around but haven't found anything. Anyone have any links? Also, are there any differences in the 2.0 turbo and the 2.4 such as stronger bolts, different transaxles, different suspension, etc.
Thanks for your help.
07 Chevy HHR with 115,000 miles and nothing replaced besides a tune up (spark plugs), oil, tires and one sensor. So far nothing has failed mechanically. I do hear a popping sound when driving over bumps. Someone said the ball joints need to be greased or oiled, but I think they are a sealed unit. I will post that question in a dif post.
Thanks again for any input.

To put it mildly. Everything is different. This would be a major undertaking. You're best bet would be a donor SS for parts because the list would be long on the parts you would need. Besides the engine, you need intercooler, computers, etc, etc, etc etc, etc. Suspension parts are different.Brakes are different(2 wheel disc vs 4 wheel disc). I wouldn't advise this swap. Rebuild the 2.4 and mod it for more power if thats what you're looking for. Supercharger would be the way to go.
Or go find a good used SS.

firemangeorge pointed you in the right direction. The SS powertrain is not interchangeable. The 2.0l turbo mates to an F35; the 2.2,2.4l to an F23. The transmissions have different input shaft splines and the flywheels use different bolt patterns. You could get a 2.0l powertrain in the car but it would require new mounts, axels, etc. I am not 100% on the autos though, but I would guess you will run into similar issues(a lot of extra parts to make it work). As for the suspension parts, they are all interchangeable. The rear disc brakes are not though. You could convert to disc, but you would need the FE5 rear axle assembly(but that is expensive too). In the end it would not be worth the cost to swap eng/trans.
Is the popping sound rattle-like. The sway bar links will commonly make that noise as well. Easy to check. If you jack the front of your car up so both wheels are off the ground, hit the sway bar by the link with your hand. If there is any noise or play they should be replaced and that could solve your noise issue.

115 thousand miles Just put on some new ones, I'd do the swaybar bushings too. I have a set of brand new factory links on the bench, you can have, however I would suggest the moogs if you have 50.00 to do it they are much heavier with a grease zert.
Trade for the SS they are fun.
BTW to the site !!

you can swap the lnf powertrain in but it must include the engine, transmission, axles, ecu, complete wiring harness, etc. the wiring is a pita and from what i understand the complete harness must be hooked up just as an actual lnf or nothing will work properly....ie the sunroof, tail lights, and all sorts of bs must be wired exactly as the lnf harness would be wired on the lnf. there are 1 or 2 swaps that i know of and from what i hear they were not easy at all to complete. the f23 is actually supposed to be pretty stout so it should last you a while. don't quote me on any of this as i could be wrong.
silverbullet08 on the hp tuner forum and cobaltss.net swapped an lsj supercharged cobalt to a lnf turbo. hit him up for a better idea than any of us can probably give you.

I am considering that as well I am building my 2.4l this winter, forged rods, pistons, etc. Then possibly doing an engine swap if I decide to get a 2.4l solstice. One issue with the m62 will be getting the supercharger to clear the firewall on the solstice. I have seen a solstice owner successfully install one but he cut the inlet of the SC. I test drove a 2.4l solstice but it felt soooo slow compared to my SC HHR. Plus I just paid off the HHR and I don't want to get into another payment...I think I am going to like the extra cash each month.

It is much more cost effective to part a kit together yourself. ZZP has a kit for roughly $2200, but you could throw a kit together for $1200. I think another member on here did it for less than that(American & Proud).

you could source a take off kit from a cobalt guy for cheap. check the for sale section on cobaltss.net
