Yeah the drawing of the utility knife cutting something seemed really unclear. The plastic itself is actually much better to look at.

But yes I would not have attempted in the first place if I didn't read the service manual.

 

Here's a video of replacement in Cobalt. Similar setup, but no rivets to drill on HHR, just remove the nuts. Shows where to cut. It's clearer on full screen. . . . . . .

 

I have only had my 2006 HHR LS for a week and the heater has stopped working. The only way it works is if I put the fan speed on highest setting, but it makes some pretty weird noises. I'm not sure if replacing the HVAC blower will fix this.

If your fan only works on the high setting, then you most likely have a bad fan resistor.
Now if the fan itself is making weird noises, then you may also have a bad fan motor.(also possible you could have debris in the fans blower cage: leafs are known to get stuck in there and cause a racket )
Sounds like you may have 2 parts that are bad.

2006 HHR are known for having a water leak issue from the front cowl area. It is caused by a part called the butyl patch.(do a search here for related threads).
The water leaking on the fan motor and resistor is generally what causes them to go bad.

I found a hacksaw blade to work very well when cutting around the backside of the blower motor. It is a poor design if you ask me.

 

I have just spent all day working on my 2006 HHR Blower motor and resistor.
But due to all the info I found on this forum, I was able to do all the repairs.

Also, yesterday I replaced the hub on the front passenger side, again with help on this forum.
