Is there a clever way to look up a vin to see if it's expected I have the old or the new tensioner?

Failing that, is that first post photo of the bolt head a good indicator? Does the new one look materially different?

Thanks, you guys that figure this stuff are awesome.

Yes it looks real flat and the new one has a thicker bolt head that's how you can tell . Not sure about vin.

anyone know if this would be replaced under extended (aftermaket) warranty? or does this fall under the 'wear and tear' category and have to pay out of own pocket?

That would be a question to ask your warranty company.
There are tons of different aftermarket warranty companies with all different kinds of plans available. Some may cover it, others may not. Just depends on your company and the policy they sold you. Call them and ask.

hate dealing with this company..guaranteed to be on the phone for at least an hour before i get an answer or they will call me back at a later time haha
