Timing chain tensioner replacement - fix engine rattle
#161
Re read this entire thread. Since I have the cobalt now, I was thinking of swapping this out on it as well. Only put about 20K on the HHR before it was totaled and never had an issue with the new tensioner. But after reading this again.... I'm confused if it's a good idea or now....lol

It's a good idea, but like all things these days get a good quality part, not the cheap off shore knock off.

I really don't like this thread. If the chain has stretched so much that the original tensioner can't provide tension, replace the timing set. This is a risky procedure, and, if successful, offers only a short term fix because the new tensioner will also be very near the end of it's stroke.

Oldblue posted a great video for replacing the timing set, and balance shaft timing set. If you have decided to take the risk, and replace only the tensioner, skip to about the 12:30 mark in the video.

I agree with RJ, if it’s making noise, fix it, and half fix it.
I always like to fix things whilst fixing other things, like replacing the water pump and the balance shaft chain, maybe even the oil pump, but you draw a line in the sand when your wallet tells you.
