Actually less than $.01. The reason for the experiment was to use a material that cost less than the face value of the legal tender.

Zinc is silver, but not shiny. Think galvanized steel, coated in zinc. Chain link fences, roofing nails, etc. It won't hold a shine if it's Zinc. It will oxidize in normal exposure. Gray is the color, not silver.

Aluminum is similar, but it can hold a shine.

Cat Man- no clue about plug nickels. Haven't even heard that term in ages. LOL

Blue-SS - You are right, I stand corrected. The coin referred to is extremely covered in a dark patina, but an area of Lincoln's head looks shiny. And I'm told the coin seems soft. IDK ?

After thinking about this, I have another thought. If it's tin, it's bronze (copper/tin alloy). Which could shine up. I don't know, just a thought.
