You are correct...except if you are interferring with other traffic in those lanes...otherwords, if THEY are doing something over the minimum and under the maximum speed limit and YOU are driving in the center or left lane at 45..you are impeding the flow of traffic. That is why the law exists.

And frankly, that is what SandyBeach is stating...have respect for the law.

I need to amend this...because I found the Florida State Traffic Law pertaining to this issue...Raed and pay particular attention to section (2).

It is Title 23, Chapter 316.081..Florida State Law.

 

Actually, at least here anyway, there is a law. They have it posted a couple of ways one is:

"Stay to the right except to pass"

"Slower traffic stay to the right"

So unless the right lanes are doing under 45......

If there are more than two lanes in the Charleston area they have signs that say:

"Trucks or vehicles with more than three axles must use right two lanes only"

Granted laws vary from state to state and area to area.

 

if you were in Mass-get the hell outta my way-chusetts and driving on say Rt128/95 (which by the way goes north, south, east, and west all at the same time) or Rt 495 or even the Mass Pike....all 3 lanes are going about 75/80MPH (and on rt 128 durning rush hours even the breakdown lane is used, legally I might add)....I swear you could take your foot off the gas and still go with the flow just from the drafting !

I drive defensively no matter what, I always trust the drivers around me will cut in front of me while going for the exit that is 3 lanes away and less that 100 feet in front of him, or stop for no reason in front of me, or bump draft me while flashing his lights because I'm not going fast enough (even in bumper to bumper traffic thats doing 80mph)...and 9 times out of 10 the person doing these things is in a heated Cell phone conversation !

man that really covers everywhere northeast of the Hudson River....so south of the river driving on interstates is a breeze....IMO

Spent a couple weeks up there 2 years ago. 95 north from Providence not to bad at about 10 in the morning. Going south at about 5 in the evening....ouch.

On a different day went south on 93/3 over to the Cape. On return we said hell with it..took 195 over to Newport...cancelled our lodgings in Boston, and stayed there to do a little sailing.

Great time on the water.....highway traffic sucks though.

 

Oh I do understand traffic, I had to go to O'hare Airport yesterday (Chicago for those who don't know) and as soon as I came to Bollingbrook I-55 became a parking lot and it stayed that way until I turned on to 294 and yeah you guessed it more parking. I could have figured that when I did reach O'Hare I had to park in the remote lots and take the train into the terminals, but even with that I was on time to pick up the family, their flight was right on time and it was so simple to hope back on the train and get back to the HHR...and I was driving my HHR so how bad could it be !!! Sandybeach, you made a great point if people would apply some common sense and courtesy in their driving, we would all be better off...

 

I take all precautions to avoid highways except for Interstate 95, I know all the secert ways (back roads, service roads, hidden lanes in the median) on that road and use all of them if needed.

 

As I stated earlier, sometimes I think they're just tired from an already long trip. Twice I drove straight through from the midwest to central and south Florida. It's not worth it. Pay the price of a hotel room and get a good night's rest. It's 6 hours through Georgia (if you don't get stuck in Atlanta traffic) and 5 through the length of Florida.

After reading your above post I had to check your age in the profile. I think the advise you are giving comes with the wisdom "of accumulating years". I think as we age, we make decisions differently.

I remember driving from Michigan to Arizona (when I was in my 20's ) straight through..in 32 hours. Would have been shorter but a tornado got in the way in Illinois. Delayed me about 4 hours.
