GM to increase production

Strong Cobalt & HHR sales are cited as part of the reason for the increase. More here:

Sure an increased demand for HHRs , but they neglect to mention whether the Mexico plant will be reopened?!?!? If we assume Retool a plant for HHR's North of the border, wouldn't that result in a higher prodcution cost?!?!?

recession cure

new law -- all owners / stock owners of any product manufactured for sale in us should live in the country of manufacture.....i guarantee it would work.

Good to see that there are still a few Americans that still have brains.

My son bought a new Cobalt LT yesterday with Cash for Clunkers. It was the last one with a 5-speed on the lot (which is what he wanted).

It makes sense to reinvest in a car company that we are bailing out with our tax money instead of sending our tax money overseas.

To by a vehicle from an overseas company with CFC money is like owning a failing deli and buying McDonalds everyday for your own lunch. WTF is wrong with some Americans?

GM to Step Up Production at Two Mexico Plants

MEXICO CITY -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Co. plans to increase production and hire new workers at two of its plants in Mexico in response to an improvement in U.S. vehicle demand, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Later this month, General Motors de Mexico will ramp up output at its pickup truck plant in Silao to 45 vehicles per hour from 40, said Teresa Cid in a phone interview. That will increase to 47 vehicles per hour at the end of October.

At GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, in northern Mexico, the company will increase output of the Chevrolet Chevy model later this month to 22 units per hour from 12, Cid added.

Output on the assembly line that produces the Chevrolet HHR, Chevrolet Captiva and Cadillac SRX - also at the Ramos Arizpe plant - will be raised to 49 units per hour from 39.

To help boost output, GM plans to hire 140 workers at Silao and 300 at Ramos Arizpe.

The local production increases are part of a broader plan by GM to increase North American output by 20% in the fourth quarter.

GM de Mexico's production in the January-to-July period plunged 48% year-on-year to 144,104 units as the global economic crisis caused vehicle demand to dry up.

But with the U.S. recession thought to be nearing an end and the U.S. government's "Cash for Clunkers" rebate program luring car buyers back to dealerships, GM expects sales to improve.
