I'd bet there are as many in use for "projects" as air cooled VW used to be. They are almost as simple.

Yes very close. Ecotec does have a little bit more to it as it has electronics and cooling, but it really isn't that bad of a deal if you have the will to make it work.

Like the SBC, we put that in everything, and a BBC .
I built a fleet of 10 Model A Fords in the late 80’s all with more modern 2.3 Pinto 4 cylinder engines and 4 speed manual transmissions
Those Ended up sold off from the guy I built them for 5 were roadsters, 5 were fordors.
I wanted to build a roadster pickup, but live got in the way.
I wonder about an Ecotec in one of those . Hmmm
