I bought my first car in 1965 for $50. It was a 1956 Mercury Monarch 2dr hardtop, 312 fourbarrel, automatic.

Cut & Paste from the old post, just up-dated the time ago..

My first car was a 1953 Chevy 210 Deluxe 2 door (18,000 mi) that had a 'spun' rod bearing...
My Dad made a deal with me, work with him for the summer, (He was a General Contractor) & that would cover the car. I was 14 yrs old..He /we much later tore down the 235cu in Stove-bolt 6cyl. & had the crank journal 'turned' & sized for an o/s bearing..Just in time for my 16th Birthday & DL (course I was already driving his p/up tk.)
(His ulterior motive) was to get me interested in 'wrenching & rides' & not hanging on street corners, getting in trouble...

It worked (mostly), I'm still a Major GearHead some 40+ yrs later... wish I still had the '53 chev though

Good memories of: "My First Car"

$50.00 for a 1936 Ford back in 1952. Drove it home from the Ford dealer where I worked (Maybe 15 miles or so) parked it in an empty lot next to my folks house and proceeded to dismantle the engine. Never did get it back together again, and after it's sitting there for several Months, my Dad had it towed away. It would have been cheaper to take the bus home that day!!

I want to ask, guys.
I plan to visit the U.S. in 2011. I plan to go Los Angeles - New York.
What's more profitable?
Rent a car for 2 weeks? Or buy an old car, drive her 3500 km and sell it?
Need your advice!
Major questions!
Is it possible to buy a cheap and sturdy cars?
Where should I buy?
Registration of the car in my name. Do I need to do this? Is this possible if I am a foreigner? How long it will take time and money?
Can I quickly sell a car in New York? Where? Who?

I could be wrong, but if you're only going to drive it for two weeks, I would think it would be cheaper to rent a car. Here in the United States, the HHR is widely used as a rental car by many car rental companies. So you could even get an HHR rental car if you'd like. A car rental will still cost a decent amount of money considering the amount of time and miles you'd be using it for, but I would think that would be the better route. By the time you buy a car and get it registered, you'll already have spent a nice sum of money. And I'm not sure how registering a car would work for you since you're from Russia. I'm not sure how that would work. Not to mention, most cheap cars are beaters, not something you'd want to drive across the country in. You don't want to buy something that's gonna break down on you... Do you know anyone in the United States that maybe you could borrow a car from? That would probably be the cheapest thing.

I do not have close friends in the U.S.
Someone from this site - acquaintance by correspondence. Someone helped me to buy parts. But it is unlikely these people lend me their car.
I read about how you guys buy old cars for 200 or 300 bucks. I see in the movies of black, who get their cars out of the landfill and fly like crazy. And I think: "Why should I spend big money for 2 weeks on wheels? " Maybe I can buy an old but sturdy car for a couple of hundred! "
By the way! You say that rent a car - it's expensive. How much does it cost? I want to know the opinion of Americans, not to be deceived in the future.
