You northern folks must have different grass and cutting requirements than us folks way down south.
Mostly centipede and St. Augustine down here for yard grass. Small number of Bermuda grass yards. We cut our grass shorter than what you guys were talking about. I measured the blade height of my riding mower and push mowers (while parked on concrete) All are right at 2 inches, blade edge to concrete.
Now the height adjuster on the rider does show it at a 3.5 setting, but as we all know, those setting numbers aren't measurements.
Anyway. This is how it looks today. I cut this grass yesterday at 6:00 pm. with the push mower.
We have turf grass; fescue and bluegrass. We call centipede and St.Augustine weeds, mainly because the turn brown in the cold that yi=ou don't get.
I have a few patches of Bahama grass that drives me absolutely nuts. That's like Centipede it spreads by both stolons and creeping. It will cover a concrete slab by creeping and the stolons can be 6 feet deep. It is absolutely impossible to kill, the only way is to dig the entire root system out and burn it.
It's that stuff the State uses on median strips that overflows onto the roadway. It also harbors gnats.
I only use the push (self propelled) mower right around the house. Only cut about 10 feet past that bird bath. The rest of our 10 acres gets the rider or the little Kubota tractor with the bush hog deck.
Yes, our property goes all the way back. About 600 feet from where I took the picture to the fence line on the far side.
That odd little raised area in the middle is the septic mound the county made us put in during construction. Always hated the fact that we're the only one's in the area that had to put in that mound system for our house.

I have a 5/8 acre lot and use a 4-step program, like Scotts. I also cut the grass at a high setting (about 4"). I have no dandelions, and few broad leaf weeds. Mostly in the very back of my yard that sometimes doesn't get a full application of fertilizer and holds a lot of water.

OK here is my "North 40" even though it is west. This is after/still 4 days of rain that is off and on, sometimes heavy. The stuff in the foreground could be when I cut it last was grass that caused the problem and I didn't bag the clippings. Also did treat that area for grubs, even though I didn't dig that area to see if I had any. Sorry for the size of the picture, wish I knew how to minimize it.
Cat Man
Down here if our grass looked like that (brown spots) it would either be from lack of water or having a "bug" in it. Mole crickets are a lawn destroyer in our area.
Now my West 40 is a weed heaven. I just bush hog it down twice a year. Can't see it from the house anyway. Needs to be cut right now.
