Chuck Berry ~ My Ding-A-Ling

When I was a little bitty boy
My Grandmother bought me a cute little toy
Silver bells hanging on a string
She told me it was my Ding a ling a ling

Oh my ding a ling, Everybody sing
I want you to play with my ding a ling a ling
Oh my ding a ling, my ding a ling
I want you to play with my ding a ling a ling

then mamma took me to Grammar School
I used to stop off in the vestibule
Every time that bell would ring
catch me playing with my ding a ling

Oh my ding a ling, I want you to play with my ding a ling a ling
My ding a ling, my ding a ling
I want you to play with my ding a ling a ling

once i was climbing the garden wall,
i slipped and had a terrible fall,
i fell so hard i heard bells ring,
but held on to my ding a ling a ling

Oh my ding a ling, my ding a ling
i want you to play with my ding a ling

My ding a ling, my ding a ling
I wanna play with my ding a ling

once i was swimming across turtle creek,
man them turtles snapping at my feet,
it sure was hard swimming cross that thing,
with both hands holding my ding a ling a ling

My ding a ling, Oh my
I wanna play with my ding a ling a ling

When they took me to Sunday School
Tried to teach me the golden rule
But every time the choir would sing
Catch me playing with my ding a ling

Oh my ding a ling, my ding a ling
I wanna play with my ding a ling
My ding (That’s right), my ding a ling
I wanna play with my ding a ling a ling

This here song, it ain’t to sad
Cutest little song you ever had
Those of you, who will not sing
You must be playing with your own ding a ling

Oh my ding a ling, my ding a ling
Now my ding a, oh my ding a
I wanna play with my ding a ling

(Oh yeah, Oh yeah, Oh yeah)

Nirvana - Lithium

I'm so happy 'cause today
I've found my friends ...
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay, 'cause so are you ...
We broke our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care ...
And I'm not scared
Light my candles, in a daze
'Cause I've found god
Hey, hey hey......

I'm so lonely, but that's okay, I shaved my head ...
And I'm not sad
And just maybe I'm to blame for all I've heard ...
But I'm not sure
I'm so excited, I can't wait to meet you there ...
But I don't care
I'm so horny, but that's okay ...
My will is good
Hey, hey hey......

I like it - I'm not gonna crack
I miss you - I'm not gonna crack
I love you - I'm not gonna crack
I killed you - I'm not gonna crack

I'm so happy 'cause today
I've found my friends ...
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay, 'cause so are you ...
We broke our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care ...
And I'm not scared
Light my candles in a daze ...
'Cause I've found god
Hey, hey hey......

I like it - I'm not gonna crack
I miss you - I'm not gonna crack
I love you - I'm not gonna crack
I killed you - I'm not gonna crack

A Hit By Varese - Chicago - 1971

Please won't you sing me
A thing that will bring me
Right into the sky
If you would play it
Just lay it down, say, it will help me get by

Something to move me
Remove me and grove me
You want to know why?
I'm so tired of oldies
And moldies and goldies, that I want to cry

Can you play free
Or in three or agree
To attempt something new
The people need you
A seed that will lead to a hit by Varese

nice

Chicago was so much more than a pop hit-factory when they first started out

CTA (1969) had South California Purples (some of the best heavy music on LP)
Combine that with Free Form Guitar, I'm A Man and some smoke and ya got a perfect album side

and sacharine-free love songs

Just You N Me (Chicago IV 1973)

You are my love and my life
And you are my inspiration
Just you 'n me
Simple and free
Baby you're everything I've ever dreamed of
Yeah, yeah

Give me your own special smile
Promise you'll never leave me
Just you 'n me
Simple and free
Life is so easy
When you're beside me
Oh girl

Come hold me close
Never release me
Oh baby don't release me
Open your arms, let my love in
Let me in, let me in, let me in
Love me tonight, love me forever
And ever
You know I can't forget you

Just you 'n me to carry on
Simple and free my lovely
To flow as one as love's reward
Lovin' you girl is so damn easy

Yeah, yeah

You are my love in my life
You are my inspiration
Just you 'n me
Simple and free
Baby you're everything I've ever dreamed of

Chicago II (1970) with the LSD anthem 25 or 6 to 4 had a couple of my favorites too

The 70's High School slow dance song

Color My World

As time goes on,
I realize
Just what you mean
To me
And now,
Now that you're near,
Promise your love
That I've waited to share
And dreams
Of our moments together
Color my world with hope of loving you

and part of the same suite

Make Me Smile

Children play in the park, they don't know
I'm alone in the dark, even though
Time and time again I see your face smiling inside
I'm so happy
That you love me
Life is lovely
When you're near me
Tell me you will stay
Make me smile
Living life is just a game so they say
All the games we used to play fade away
We may now enjoy the dreams we shared so long ago
Oh my darling, got to have you. Feel the magic when I hold you
Cry sweet tears of joy, touch the sky
Now I need you more than ever. No more crying - we're together
Tell me you will stay. Make me smile

Another band that gets dissed way more than they deserve is Three Dog Night

Out In The Country from It Ain't Easy (1970)

(peaked at #15 in 1970)

Whenever I need to leave it all behind
Or feel the need to get away-ay-ay
I find a quiet place, far from the human race
Out in the country

Before the breathin' air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'

Whenever I feel them closing in on me
Or need a bit of room to move
When life becomes too fast, I find relief at last
Out in the country

Before the breathin' air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'

------ organ ------

Before the breathin' air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'

Before the breathin' air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'

Before the breathin' air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
(fade)

and ya gotta love

Mama Told Me Not To Come

(words and music by Randy Newman
#1 hit for Three Dog Night in 1970)

Want some whiskey in your water?
Sugar in your tea?
What's all these crazy questions they're askin' me?
This is the craziest party that could ever be
Don't turn on the lights 'cause I don't wanna see

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
"That ain't the way to have fun, no"

Open up the window, let some air into this room
I think I'm almost chokin' from the smell of stale perfume
And that cigarette you're smokin' 'bout scare me half to death
Open up the window, sucker, let me catch my breath

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"

The radio is blastin', someone's knockin' at the door
I'm lookin' at my girlfriend - she's passed out on the floor
I seen so many things I ain't never seen before
Don't know what it is - I don't wanna see no more

Mama told me not to come
Mama told me not to come
She said, "That ain't the way to have fun, son"

"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"
"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"

"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"
"That ain't the way to have fun, no"
"That ain't the way to have fun, son"

Back to Chicago II and I'll stop

25 or 6 To 4 (LSD-25 or 6PM to 4AM hence a 10 hour trip)

Waiting for the break of day
Searching for something to say
Flashing lights against the sky
Giving up I close my eyes
Sitting cross-legged on the floor
25 or 6 to 4

Staring blindly into space
Getting up to splash my face
Wanting just to stay awake
Wondering how much I can take
Should have tried to do some more
25 or 6 to 4

Feeling like I ought to sleep
Spinning room is sinking deep
Searching for something to say
Waiting for the break of day
25 or 6 to 4
25 or 6 to 4

RIP Terry Kath (1/31/46 - 1/23/78)

Bet No One Ever Hurt This Bad - Three Dog Night from Three Dog Night (1969)

Look out my window, watch the rain.
I hear it beating on my windowpane
But it hurts me so bad,
Bet no one ever hurt this bad.

My baby left me all alone,
Waitin’ for a letter sittin’ by the telephone
But it hurts me so bad,
Bet no one ever hurt this bad.

Since you went away,
Cannot face the day
And night brings nothin’ but pain.
Even I was wrong feelin’ that I can’t go on,
Baby please come home
Can’t stand being alone.

Somebody somewhere, hear my plea,
And send my baby back home to me
But it hurts me so bad
Bet no one ever hurt this bad.

Since you went away,
Cannot face the day
And night brings nothin’ but pain.
Even I was wrong feelin’ that I can’t go on,
Baby please come home
Can’t stand being alone.

Somebody somewhere, hear my plea,
And send my baby back home to me
But it hurts me so bad
Bet no one ever hurt this bad.

But it hurts me so bad
Bet no one ever hurt this bad.

(This song is also a Randy Newman cover)

Martin Briley - Salt In My Tears

I never did it, no, I won't admit it
Why should I lie for you anymore
You never loved me, you pushed and shoved me
I see the woman I never saw

I saw you laugh when the knife was twisted
It still hurts but the pain has shifted
I'm lookin' back at the time that drifted by
But I won't cry for the wasted years
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears

Feeling neglected, used and rejected
You need a shoulder to lean upon
Baby you picked him, found your next victim
Don't worry someone will come along

I broke the spell that you kept me under
I had enough of the rain and thunder
I lost track of the time and I wonder why
But I won't cry for the wasted years
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears

I'll sit around and drink a few more beers
Until the memory just disappears
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears

I saw you laugh when the knife was twisted
It still hurts but the pain has shifted
I'm lookin' back at the time that drifted by
But I won't cry for the wasted years
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears

'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears

My favorite

Comfortably Numb (Gilmour, Waters)

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?
Come on, now,
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I'll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

O.K.
Just a little pin*****.
There'll be no more aaaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good.
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

Here's one of my PF favorites:

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way
The time is gone
The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

Frank Zappa ~ Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy from Bongo Fury (1975)

I could'a swore her hair was made of rayon
She wore a Milton-Bradley crayon
But she was something I could lay on
Can't remember what became of me
Carolina hard-core ecstasy

She put a Doobie Brothers tape on
(lalalalalaa la)
I had a Roger Daltrey cape on
(a Roger Daltrey cape on)
There was a bed I dumped her shape on
Can't remember what became of me
Carolina hard-core ecstasy

Somewhat later on, I woke up and she was gone
There was dew out on the lawn
In the sunrise
Later she came back, with a rumpled paper sack
Which she told me would contain
A surprize

She stuck her hand right in and to the bottom
Said she knew I'd be surprized she got 'em
Take a Charleston PIMP! to spot 'em
Then she gave a pair of shoes to me
Plastic leather fourteen triple D

I said I wonder what's the shoes for
She told me "Don't you worry no more"
And got right down there on the tile floor
"Now darling stomp all over me"
Carolina Hard-core ecstasy

Is this something new?
Having people stomp on you?
Is it what I need to do for your pleasure?
(Pleasure is all I need)

What is this a quiz?
Don't you worry what it is.
It is merely just a moment I can treasure

By ten o'clock her arms and legs were rendered
She couldn't talk cuz' her mouth had been extendered
It looked to me as though she had been blendered
What was this abject misery?
Carolina Hard-core ecstasy

[guitar solo]

What was this abject misery?
Carolina Hard-core ecstasy
What was this abject misery?
Carolina Hard-core ecstasy

It might seem strange to Herb and Dee
Carolina Hard-core ecstasy

Advance Romance from the same album

No more credit
From the liquor store
Suit is all dirty, boy
Shoes is all wore
Tired and lonely, my
Heart is all sore
Advance romance
I can't stand it no more
Told me she loved me
I believed what she said
Took me for a sucker, boy
All corn-fed
Next thing I knew
She had a bolt on the door
Advance romance
I can't use it no more
She took George's watch
Like they always do
(It was a Timex, too!)
No more money, boy
I shoulda knew

'You know I told ya'
'I know you told me'
'Ya didn't listen to me'
'But I couldn't listen to ya!'
'Told ya 'bout the anchovies... George DUKE!'

The way she do me, boy
She might do you, too
Advance romance
People I am through!
Potato-head Bobby
was a friend of mine
Open three of his eyes
In the food stamp line
Open four of his eyes
In the food stamp line
Open five of his eyes
In the food stamp line
Open six of his eyes
In the food stamp line
Said she might be a devil
But she sure was fine
Advance romance
He wanna try it one time
Later that night
He drop on by
Told her all he wanna do
Was step up and say "Hi"
Half an hour later
She had frenched his fry
Advance romance
Bobby, say good-bye

Sam With The Showing Scalp Flat Top also on the same album "sung" by Captain Beefheart

Sam with the showing scalp flat top,
particular about the point it made.
Why, when I was knee-high to a grasshopper,
this black juice came out on a hard shelf chin.
And we called that 'tobacco juice'.
I used to fiddle with my back feet music for a black onyx.
My black tarred room absorbed every echo..
The music was.. thud like. The music was.. thud like.
I usually played such things as roughneckin thug

Opaque melodies that would bug most people.
Music from the other side of the fence.
A black swan figurine lay on all color lily pads.
On a little conglomeration table of pressed black felt.
With same color shadows, and seamed(?) knobbed knees, and what-nots.
The long hallway rolled out into oddball odd.
Beside the fly-pecked black doorway,
that looked closed on the tar-lattice street.
Up a wrought iron fire escape.
Rolled out a tiny wooden platform with
dark, hard, dark rubber wheels.
Roll, skreek! Roll, skreek! Roll, skreek!
Sam with the showing scalp flat top,
particular about the point it made.

Sam was a BASKET CASE!

A hardened dark ivory clip held.. saleable everyday pencils.
I wish I had a pair 'o bongos!
Bongo Fury! Bongo Fury!
Oowwwww! Bongo Fury!
(boogie!)
Bongo Fury! Bongo Fury!

The Muffin Man has my favorite FZ guitar solo and is my favorite song on this album - Absolutely CLASSIC Zappa!

The Muffin Man is seated at the table in the laboratory of the Utility Muffin
Research Kitchen... Reaching for an oversized chrome spoon he gathers an
intimate quantity of dried muffin remnants and brushing his scapular aside
procceds to dump these inside of his shirt...
He turns to us and speaks:

"SOME PEOPLE LIKE CUPCAKES BETTER. I FOR ONE CARE LESS FOR THEM!"

Arrogantly twisting the sterile canvas snoot of a fully charged icing
anointment utensil he poots forths a quarter-ounce green rosette (oh ah yuk
yuk... let's try that again...!) He poots forth a quarter-ounce green rosette
near the summit of a dense but radiant muffin of his own design.
Later he says:

"SOME PEOPLE... SOME PEOPLE LIKE CUPCAKES EXCLUSIVELY, WHILE MYSELF, I SAY
THERE IS NAUGHT NOR OUGHT THERE BE NOTHING SO EXALTED ON THE FACE OF GOD'S GREAT
EARTH AS THAT PRINCE OF FOODS... THE MUFFIN!"

Girl you thought he was a man
But he was a muffin
He hung around till you found
That he didn't know nuthin'

Girl you thought he was a man
But he only was a-puffin'
No cries is heard in the night
As a result of him stuffin'

Bruce Fowler on trombone, Napoleon Murphy Brock on tenor sax, and lead vocals,
Terry Bozzio on drums, Tom Fowler on bass, Denny Walley on slide, George Duke
on keyboards, Captain Beefheart on vocals, and soprano sax, and madness.
Thank you very much for coming to the concert tonight. Hope you enjoyed it.
Goodnight Austin, Texas, where ever you are.

My Parties - Dire Straits

Well this is my back yard - my back gate
I hate to start my parties late
here's the party cart - ain't that great?
that ain't the best part baby - just wait
that a genuine weather vane - it moves with the breeze
portable hammock baby - who needs trees
it's casual entertaining - we aim to please
at my parties

Check out the shingles - it's brand new
excuse me while I mingle - hi, how are you
hey everybody - let me give you a toast
this one's for me - the host with the most

It's getting a trifle colder - step inside my home
that's a brass toilet tissue holder with its own telephone
that's a musical doorbell - it don't ring, I ain't kiddin'
it plays America the beautiful and tie a yellow ribbon

Boy, this punch is a trip - it's o.k. in my book
here, take a sip - maybe a little heavy on the fruit
ah, here comes the dip - you may kiss the cook
let me show you honey - it's easy - look
you take a fork and spike 'em - say, did you try these?
so glad you like 'em - the secret's in the cheese
it's casual entertaining - we aim to please
at my parties

Now don't talk to me about the polar bear
don't talk to me about the ozone layer
ain't much of anything these days, even the air
they're running out of rhinos - what do I care?
let's hear it for the dolphin - let's hear it for the trees
ain't running out of nothing in my deep freeze
it's casual entertaining - we aim to please
at my parties
