New tire time!

Yes, I know this is probably a dead horse that has been beaten too many times....

I need tire recommendations. I think being that it's coming on winter first, I need winter tire recommendations.

Which brands do you prefer?

Also, for the spring time, with a new set of summer rims, I need some tire suggestions for then too..

BOTH SETS OF RIMS WILL BE 16"

Thank you all!

Kevin

Yup - your first sentence is right - give the search tool a try, as there is literally a mountain of info and suggestions out there already on the forum here, covering both winter and summer tires.

Thank you Whopper for your reply. I am aware of the other threads, however, as we age, tire brands get better and worse, and names of tires change. So, with that, I restate my question..

Which brands do you prefer?

~with tongue in cheek~ I guess I missed the technological leap in tire design that must have just occurred - carry on then.

I think he means more along the lines of new tire coming out and older styles going away.

Are you looking for dedicated snow tires, or just nice all seasons? If snow tires, then I know Bridgestone blizzak is a good one. I have them on my winters and they have all kinds of traction in snow. Mine are (I think) 215/55-16. Dont quite me on that though.

Frenchy,

Yes, thank you. That is exactly what I mean. I have had Michelin symmetry tires for 3 years now.. Those are no longer available, and I know there are new ones and different models out now..

I was hoping to have a dedicated set of Winter Rims/Tires, and a dedicated Summer set as well. I hear good things on Blizzaks, but I wanted to get more opinions now before I take the plunge in the near future and have to get something!

I appreciate your input Frenchy!

I use Road Hugger GT Eco for summer use. Warranty for 60,000 miles tread life. Great in driving through heavy rain and it has a pretty smooth ride. I won't use it for winter time but the tread pattern looks like it would be one of the better all season tire for the snow. I think I paid around $530 installed.

I use Firestone Winterforce for winter use. This is my 1st time using them on my HHR but I have used the same tires on two other cars. What I've found is that the tread life is ok for the winter compound (35,000 miles on the last set) and its a little loud. However in the snow and ice, they are unstoppable. Great tires for a 2WD car that still have to deal with a lot of snow.

I'm running Continental Extreme Contact DW's and Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ's Kev.

The Connies are nice, quiet, good in the wet, and very long lasting. But they do cost a bit more compared to other brands like Kuhmo, Hancook, Goodyear, Bridgestone/Firestone in the same size.

The Tiger Paw GTZ's are amazingly good when it comes to pure handling, quietness, and wet road performance. The big downside to them is their soft rubber compound, no mileage warranty, and the recommendation from Uniroyal that they not be used in temperatures below freezing. They flat spot in cold weather and until you build heat in them, it's like you have square wheels.

Unfortunately, you're in snow country, so I'd be hesitant to try my choice in tires during a Michigan winter.
