Australian Shepherd.
Smartest dog ever. Real Active. Great with kids.

Shelties are good to. very kind-hearted dogs

Do yourself a favor and go get a mutt somewhere. Best dog I ever had was a mutt. Incidentally, She was a Sheltie and Australian Shep mix. I miss Jude =(

My brother has a jack russel and that dog is a POS!! I have had 4 pits over the years and I love them. Best dogs I have ever had. Just raise them right.
I now have a chihuahua and a whippet (a small greyhound). You have to be a real man to walk down the street with a chihuahua, I miss my pits.

I have brother and sister Chihuahua/Pomeranians (different litters) who will play catch for hours!

They bark when they have to, are very protective of me, and will lick you to death--and will be your friends forever if you toss them a toy...

The day I got Maximo, at 8 weeks, we hit the Grapevine from OC to Oakland, he has loved long drives since! So they may be small, but love cars/trucks, toys, good 'alarms', etc...

Try and rescue if you can...

Good luck!

I would say an Italian Greyhound. Ours is just around 14 lbs. Is kitty litter trained. Does not shed. Loves attention. Very smart.

Do his friends make fun of him for using the kitty litter?

dude... dude.... i hear you. you will laugh... get a pug. they have that bad ass face. they are smallish but stocky so they look tough. they are very very social and love companionship and will cuddle up to you constantly. the main advantage is that unlike alot of the past breeds they are low energy like they sleep 15-16 hours a day. however when you flip that switch these dogs are soooo funny and love to learn and play.

My last dog was a mutt and the best one I've ever had. He lived to be 16 and we had to put him down because he was almost blind, deaf and in terrible pain from arthritis. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do and won't ever have another dog because of that experience.

My one suggestion to you is whatever dog you decide on, check out the shelters before you buy. There are so many great animals waiting for adoption. Oh, and steer clear of the puppy mills. Severe inbreeding seriously affects many of these poor animals, making many of them poor pets.
