OKAY, suggest a dog that is still bad a$$ looking, but loveable as hell, get a BOXER, I have a boxer and he's the most loveable bigger dog I've ever owned, he follows me everywhere, if I'm cooking he lays under the kitchen and watches for me to drop something (anything more like it) if I'm in the shower, YES he pops his head in to try and lick the soap off my leg...lol when he's outside and I'm in, he wants in, and vice versa... I LOVE MY BOY, he's my 90lb lapdog, (NO KIDDING) he gets up there and if I wanna take a nap he'll lay on me in my recliner for the duration of the nap... they are so loving and kind, and for kids, mine has an 11 and 8 yr old that are constantly giving him kisses and bugging him, he doesn't have an aggressive bone in his entire body... So many boxer owners including myself say, once you go boxer you will never be w/out a boxer again...

how could you resist a cute thing like this...

I am owned by 4 of these and its like having 4 little kids. In and out all day long. In the bed at night. In my lap when I sit down. Under my feet when Im cooking so they can clean the floor if I drop something. They keep the kids faces clean after snacking. These dogs are very loyal to their master. They think they are small lap dogs but big dogs when they need to be.
Let one own you and I promise you will enjoy being owned by a BOXER.

yep.

My black lab came from the county shelter.

It's just that with two boys now, I don't want to jip them out of growing up with a dog. So I have to accept that as cool as dogs are, they all come with that one major defect. They die.

Just the right size dog, about 25 pounds. Big enough to be considered a "manly" dog, but yet small enough for my wife to easily handle.

Eddie adopted me from a stairwell just outside the door from the apt. that we were moving out of. Couldn't imagine life w/o him!

I'm with Kim -
I have a 7 lb. shih tzu, chic. mix who is very smart. Hope that helps.
- go with the Shihtzu. My little guy, LeBut, just passed away in March. He was 12. They are a smart breed, learn tricks easy, lovable with kids and they do not shed! I groomed my little guy by myself, he was easy to trim. I didn't like doing his nails so had them done by a local shop.

Our other dog, Xena is a pappillon/chin cross and they are also a great pet with kids. She's a little bit bigger and better at running. My hubby wanted a bigger dog at first but I talked him into the smaller one and now he prefers them. A bigger dog doesn't make a guy more manly...lol. If I'm out running the guy with the cute dog catches my eye more then the one with the big brute of a dog.

This is Xena - the little trickster figured out how to escape from the kitchen a week after we brought her home. She's two now.

And this is a picture of LeBut. He loved playing in the snow.

Boxer mixes are soooo great. You get the look without the big drooling foaming thing, and they are faithful and loving, scary-looking to some, but wouldn't hurt a fly who spoke to them nicely.

Look what boxer mixes can get you...
Xena is boxer Rhodesian Ridgeback, sweet, quick, a beta dog to the end.

Zanzibar is boxer - lab - chow, and although she's sweet and loving, a leader, she lives to make sure I'm safe. I socialized her from the beginning and she's a big scary barker when strangers come, but still safe with people and in dogo parks.

Look at boxer mutts under a year old...figure out whether you want a beta dog or an alpha dog, and learn to test the dog for those traits first. Remember, an alpha dog needs a very strong and consistent owner.

Looking for a mid-size dog with a decent disposition, fair intelligence and still looks pretty manly?

Two words: Shiba Inu. It's a Japanese breed that looks a bit like a shrunken red husky, but are very easy to train, have a Zen-like outlook on life, and won't make you feel like Paris Hilton in drag.
