OMG! Reccomend me a new dog.
I wasn't breed bashing, just saying his is a terd. Mostly because there is a huge lack of training and disciplne.
Here is my mutt. His name is Scrabble. 1/2 Chihuahua, 1/2 Terrier...the high-strung qualities in each breed negate eachother in Scrabble. He has the calmest personality. Lapdog...for sure. never barks just to bark, but when he does, it's a deep "big" bark and I know to get up and check on things.
He was due to be put down when he was just a puppy and my sister adopted him. He' so ugly, he's cute!
I love mutts.

My one suggestion to you is whatever dog you decide on, check out the shelters before you buy. There are so many great animals waiting for adoption. Oh, and steer clear of the puppy mills. Severe inbreeding seriously affects many of these poor animals, making many of them poor pets.
If you do want a pure bred something, check into greyhound rescue. These dogs are only raced until they are 2-3 years old, and then put down. They're kept in crates, never see grass, never see stairs, just crate, racetrack, crate. Rescue one and let him or her be a dog. When I get my own house thats the first thing I'm doing. They're great with kids, and as active as you would think they are, real couch potatoes.
If you rescue a dog, in your heart you will always know you did the right thing.
Personelly I was always partial to German Shepards, but they seem to be getting over breed again. I now have 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs. They do great with kids, can be trained to pull a wagon (with proper equipment) and love hanging with thier family. One of mine is a Therapy Dog, and the other is my Service Dog.

If you want B I G, the Leonberger is a big dog, a gentle dog, and great with kids and family also.

Hello:
have had four dalmatians over the last 30 years--I raised two as pups and rescued my last two.
Our current dal, Honey---we got from a DC rescuse.
This is truly a great breed! Dp some research and if you think you may want to adopt---let me know---I will put you in touch with a rescue.
dals do it all:
hunt, fish, ride, great watch dogs, great family dogs, fearless, playful and truly loving.
peace and good luck
