This question is about my 2002 Chevy Suburban K2500.

This weekend I noticed one of the DRLs was burned out. I pulled the lens assembly and twisted the socket and removed it from the lens assembly.

The bulb has a plastic flat base, which had apparently melted and fused to the socket. The socket was discolored slightly brownish. I pulled the other side and noticed it had done the same thing. These were original stock bulbs. If I would had put in higher-wattage bulbs, I could understand the melting.

So now I have to replace the sockets. I pulled the glass part of the bulb off and tried to pull out the bulb base with pliers. The sockets have an "insert" that I pulled out when trying to pull the bulb base out. This "insert appears to plug into the actual socket.

Can I replace the "insert" part or do I replace the whole socket. Does the dealer carry these parts?

Just info.....

I know of several people that have had "the melt" problem with GM headlight/DRL's. Happens in many Vettes, several HHR's and a number of different truck models.

Those that have experienced this problem wired in new bulb sockets. Several suggested the ceramic sockets available in the aftermarket and then used a SLIGHTLY higher K value and wattage, bulb.

Can't say if you would/could have the same repair result.

Snoopy's right, vettes and trucks will need new sockets. They will come with the butt connectors.

 

Had the same problem with my diesel truck a couple years ago, as both said, replace the sockets. Should be available @ Autozone/Advance/Pep Boys/etc. etc.
