Locally here a 5 year old boy was sexually assaulted by a pit bull a few weeks back. Does nothing for the image of the breed. I don't care if there are gentle pit bulls around, when the majority are uncontrollable fighting monsters, a ban is the proper action to take.
I have know a few people who owned pits, but they all got theirs from different rescue group as puppies. The people adopted them NEVER raised a hand to them.
One when she was about 2yrs, could no longer be taken to the dog park, she was aggressively barking and barring teeth at smaller dogs. She was reported and rec 1 warning. Funny thu she had a cat that slept with her. Long story shortened. By age 3, the dog had attacked a larger dog walking by the apt. 4th Warning. By the age of 4 when the owner was out of town(and the dog knew the dog sitter very well) mamed the sitters pit, jumped the fence, killed 2 poodles as the lady was walking them across the street. This time the dog was put down.
But out of 5 pits that I know of very friendly, loving, so gentle, only 1 is alive now, the rest we put down, because of aggression and harm to other animals.
Sometimes this happens to the best of all breeds. Some cities have aready banned the dog. Some Home owners Insurance will not insure you if you have a pit.
Years back it was the Dobie, the Shepard, Rottie, and a few others. But yes the pit has gotten a very bad name, due to people inbreeding the breed to insure that they will rec the best fighter. Once in the Gene pool it will be there till the last of that blood line is gone.

so lets ban certain races that are 'dangerous', or cars... why not ban pms while we are at it to? whats next? banning people from having kids since kids are dangerous too? its not the breed, its raising and selective breeding that turns them evil. by the ideals of the poeple who perpatuate banning a breed, we should take anything that might be dangerous and erradicate it. im all for making people register their pets and having to carry insurance on them. but then again the illegal breeders and fight runners dont follow laws now, why would they even if you ban the breed? think back about 15-20 years... back then it was doberman pinchers...
anyways i could show any evidence i could find and the knee jerk sheeple who have heard some leading voice calling for a ban will still be shouting it from the roof tops... instead lets fight for stifferpenatlies for the owners and those involved with the illegal activities and leave the law abiding RESPONSIBLE pet owners alone?
btw in case anyone thinks other wise, i dont own pits.

Many breeders will try to focus on the aggressive traits rather than the more docile traits. This is what causes the problems. I'm sure that if you got pups from a reputable AKC certified breeder, you would have little, if any problems.
Now you're making sense!
A friend of mine has 8 red nosed pits for sale in Tucson if anyone is interested. Seriously.
Anyway, there are no BAD dogs just BAD owners. I've had (in Montana) a Husky/Wolf mix. No probs. My parents have had Rotty's. No probs. Friends have had Pits. No probs. My ex had Great Pyranese. No Probs. I have also had a Husky/St Bernard mix. No probs. All very loving dogs. You have to respect the animals. Abuse them and raise a hand to them and you're bound to get bit.
I agree with stiffer penalties to owners. Agressive people raise bad dogs and bullies for children. Blame the owners, not the innocent dogs.
