Many breeders will try to focus on the aggressive traits rather than the more docile traits. This is what causes the problems. I'm sure that if you got pups from a reputable AKC certified breeder, you would have little, if any problems.
That is what I said, that the bad blood lines will continue untill it is died out.
My friends were tring to help an animal, that is why the took the rescues.
They all know better now.

This thread should be banned........I do have Pit's and haven't had any problems with them attacking people that they were not supposed to. I even had them before we had kids, and when my daughter was brought home the most aggressive Pit I've ever owned let her do whatever she wanted to her. As a baby she would pull her ears, play with her eyes, stick her fingers in the dogs nose and never ONCE did that dog ever make a threatning move towards her. If she ever would have, I would have put 5 cents of lead in her head. When she had enough of the baby, the dog simply got up and walked away. 8 years later I still own that same dog and now have 2 kids and never one problem....So put that in your pipe and smoke it...... It's all in the training......

I haven't had a Pit before but did have a dog that showed aggressive behavior towards my son when he was a wee toddler. Thats all it took for me. I took this animal to the animal shelter the very next morning. There was nothing that provoked this behavior from this animal. I choose my sons safety as my responsibility of being a parent. I know many will disagree with my decision but I make no apologies.

Dobermans and rotts had the same rep about 20 years ago. Visious dogs can't trust them, ban them. Well now it's the Pitt bulls turn. Any individual dog that shows these aggressive traits should be put down. If they do any harm to anyone the owner is responsible. There is no real way to "BAN" a breed from the US. Individual cities can but very few will. Then you just have them breeding even more aggressive dogs outside the city limits. Kind of like banning guns. Doesn't work.

I'll share something that recently happened in our house.

Bonnie had a dog, Spot, which she had for over 10 years. It had always been a docile dog, a mixture of a few hunting breeds-mostly blue-tick hound.

When Caleb came home at 5 months old, both our dogs were great with him. However, as Spot got older, he started to become aggressive towards Caleb. With no provocation, he would snap at him, it took just a couple of these instances before we know that we needed to make a very difficult decision. Spot was a good dog, but our child's safety had to come first.

Of course, now we have another large dog, a golden retiever. At the same time this dog is loved and feared by Caleb. The fear is mostly because of her being so hyperly friendly and without meaning to hurts Caleb when playing somtimes. This is where the puppy training they go to each week and the obediance training they will go to will help make sure everyone is loved AND safe.

The worst things my dogs do.....pee on your leg when excited to see you, and drool on your shoes while they watch you eat ice cream. Both labs, one is 8, the other is 10. The older one, Bud, is such a pig that my son gave him a new nickname...."Landfill".

I neighbor has their second pit. The first developed bone cancer and was put down recently. the second is a recently rescued female. So far she seems nice, but we'll see.
