It is not the dogs fault, it is solely the fault of the owner/breeder. The main problem comes from those who dont want a pit or other large breed dog for what they are. What they are is loyal, obedient, loving and VERY protective guardians. Think of them as a over protective older brother who would rather die than let a percieved threat injure or harm their family. You have people who dont want them for that. They want them as a masculine, look how tough I am, barely controllable, machine.
People always try and lay ethics on a dog like it knows right from wrong. A dogs sense of right and wrong comes solely from its training and environment. They are just animals. If you abuse one, they turn "mean" (though they are not actualy mean they are just defending themselves as they dont know affection.) Treat one with compassion, a firm hand, love and make sure YOU are the alpha, and you will never have a problem.
Last week when my dad and I were hanging a new stormdoor I heard my dog (tiny 4lb rat terrier mutt) go nuts. I looked out at the fence and saw a large pit mix. So i did the redneck clapping of hands and shouting of "gitonouttaheah". The dog layed down and tucked tail like I had just beat him. So i went over to him let him smell me, patted his ribs and told pop "this is the biggest pud ive ever seen." He belonged to a neighbor of mine, he had broken his chain in search of water and had been rolling around in a puddle out by the road to get cool. We took they dog back to his home and rechained him and he was fine. We took him home because to many people have that knee-jerk reaction to seeing a pit, rott or dobie and we didnt want him to get hurt by some idiot.
Banning a dog for its looks makes no sense. The only problem I've ever had out of a large breed dog was my buddys rottie taking me out at the knees. (rotties like to lean and if you not ready for an eighty pound lap dog to slouch up against you, your going down )

 

IMO there are really only two dogs worth owning and they both have a bad rep. I will only own pits or rotts, preferably rotts. If you want to ban pits you might as well ban all domesticated dogs. I mean after all every dog is capable of of snapping or attacking given the right circumstances. From the biggest most bad ass bullmastiff down to the littlest shaky yappy carpet pissing poodle.

Again it is the owners fault, not the dogs. Inbreeding and just plain aggressive breeding is the main problem. Just like human, you treat them bad enough for long enough and they snap.

 

How often did you hear pit bull stories before all this M. Vick ****? Now that all his crap is out in the open all the pit haters are going to come out of the woodwork. Just like if there is a school shooting all the anti-gun and anti-video game jerk offs come out in full force.

 

this angers me to see this more than anything. maybe ill get in trouble for it but i almost dont care. it is never the dogs fault and is always the owners fault. i currently work in a vet clinic and i can only name 2 pitbulls that are agressive that are clients of ours. and that is out of atleast 20-30 and there are some more agressive dogs of other breeds. what colorado did a few years ago was completly outrageous and uncalled for. every dog has to be socialized no matter the breed and if it is not socialized properly then it will be a bad dog. i have been working with animals for 5 years now and would never believe that one breed should be completely wiped out. that is just f--kd up

 

We see reports of pit bull attacks in the Boston area quite frequently. Of course then there are the frequent reports of murder, fire, drug busts, rock throwing from bridges, and the tunnel leaks in the Big Dig.

All I can say is... That poor woman in Washington did not deserve to be mauled by these dogs.... she was asleep in her bedroom, the dogs broke in thru her pet door, and attacked her while she was sleeping.... what kind of training does that come from?????

 

I heard reported a few years ago that most dog bites were Dalmatians. Lets ban them! and the Fire Trucks!LOL!
