Forgot one other thing, I know of a few people that have trained, and gotten certified, Pit Bulls for Service Dogs.

I've mixed feelings here. I do believe that due to breeding, some dogs will be "born" bad (for clarity sake I feel the same way about children, but thats not for here :) )

But the majority of the attacks come from improperly raised and managed dogs.

I've a pair of mutts. A boxer/chow mix that some think looks like she has pit, and a boxer/rhodesian mix. They both allow the grand-kids to get a bit agressive, and finally, just come to us to hide.

Owners should be held accountable for any action of their pets.

I have a strong feeling that it is NURTURE not NATURE.

My immediate instinct was to say that it must follow that we should ban little boys from school to protect the little girls...but that's going a bit far.

When my dog trainer heard that my pup was boxer/chow, she told me, "Your dog will need to be socialized; she must come into contact with at least 50 people before she is 6 months old." It's true that she has a different nature than her bonkers "sister" but I actually think it's due to her being smarter, not more dangerous. It takes her about 3 good visits before she wants to roll around and lick your hand...It's gonna take me a whole lot longer!

Do I believe there's such a thing as a born bad dog? Probably...
But a whole bad breed? Man, that's doubtful.

For all those that think it's the breeder and not the breed are just fooling yourselves. Thankfully, in Miami-Dade county, there is already such a ban on these terrors.

Ban dogs? What are you nuts? I say ban toddlers, look at this viscous attack!!!!!!!

My poor rottie didn't know what to do while he was under attack!!!!!!

This is silly folks. Hell more little dogs are meaner that big dogs. They just don't do as much damage. But banning? Punish the owners. responsible owner will do what is right. A previous rotty I owned was a little skiddish around kids. But never attached. She snipped at a neighbors kids once (after being told to not try and pet her). She now lives on a farm. I just didn't trust her to be around others anymore. And it was better than putting her down.

You want to ban something, ban idiots.

Honestly I have yet to meet a mean pit. Most of the dogs I know are some form of pit. It seems like almost every dog owner I know owns a pit or some mixed pit breed. I have encountered tons of pits and have yet to encounter one that I consider to be a terror or a threat. I know they exist but they are very uncommon. What I think is funny is that nobody keeps track of how many dog attacks come from something like a poodle, dalmatian, dachshund, or greyhound nor do you see them lobbying to get them banned. I'm sure there are just as many dog attacks if not more from what everyone perceives to be gentle docile family dog breeds but everyone wants to center on the dogs they are afraid of like pits, rotts, and dobys. Pit breeds are some of the most loyal and smart dogs you can own and in the right hands they are big babies that demand lots of love and will make you laugh for hours because they are goofballs. Most pits have a great personality but a lot of people don't get to see it because they fear the animal. Not to mention people will still raise pits here in America even with a ban.

In most dogs' cases, it is how they are brought up. I say most cases because some dogs, just like some people, can just snap. Putting a ban on one specific breed of dog is almost like racism. There are just as many attacks from other breeds, but like others said, people only point out the ones that are stereotypically mean. It is the owner who should be held accountable for their pets' actions.

Instead of banning them, make it as impossible as possible for the wrong people to own a pit, or any other animal for that matter. I think there should be a licensing program, mandatory obedience training (if you're not a trainer yourself), and other precautions such as a 6' fence or a pen that will hold the dog in the yard.

Ban idiots, like somebody else said. If there's a BEWARE OF DOG sign or you've had a prior warning to not mess with the dog, then don't do it. That's half the problem right there...

banning one breed is racism, they are dogs just different races. there has been studies done that prove there are hundreds of times more bites by ankle nippers then any other breed, they just dont get reported cause they are little dogs... THOSE are the inbred terrors!
btw a ban on any given breed is like a ban on automatic weapons, true the law abiding citizens might stop owning them, but the ones we are really trying to stop will keep on breaking the law, whats one more broken law to them? so you take guns (or pit bulls) out of the hands of law abiding citizens, now guess who has all the pit bulls? same people with all the guns!..

btw if you do ban the dogs, and you are succesfull in eradicating a proud breed thats been here longer than any of you, what makes you think they wont start figting black labs, or ****er spanieals, or chihuahuas? quit blaming the breed... blame the responsible parties punsih them. you dont cure cancer by killing the person, you treat and or remove the cancer. so the rest of the body can live healthy.

oh and one more thing, in the mind set of people who think the breed should be banned and erradicated because a minority is bad... should we then do that same with the human race?

why do we call for a law on everything? can't we simply be aware of the problem and take responsibility on both sides for situations?

do not call for an umbrella law - you have your opinion, others have theirs... simply be respectful of the difference and leave it at that... the government does not run our lives nor should we call on it to do such.

**end rant**
