So sad.

Requiescat in pace Joe.

What would you think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me ?
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song
And I'll try not to sing out of key.

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends

What do I do when my love is away
(Does it worry you to be alone ?)
How do I feel by the end of the day,
(Are you sad because you're on your own ?)

No, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody
I need somebody to love
Could it be anybody
I want somebody to love.

Would you believe in a love at first sight
Yes I'm certain that it happen all the time
What do you see when you turn out the light
I can't tell you but I know it's mine,

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm, gonna try with a little help from my friends

Do you need anybody, I just need someone to love
Could it be anybody, I want somebody to love.

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
with a little help from my friends.

RIP ......JOE.

Still have your autograph, when you appeared at the Grande, in Detroit, just after Woodstock......along with Janet Joplin's, who followed you the next show.

Both gone, absolutely amazing.

Never did like what he called music. Really did not like his voice at all but,... there used to be a girl in my town who really really liked him.

He was supposed to do a show at the new at the time 5 season center in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I lived in northwest Wisconsin then but she offered me many things if I would just take her to see the show.

Well as it happened I knew where the venue was located and had the time off I was just a little short on cash so I sold my 66 Mustang to be able to afford the trip without over loading my credit card.

Back then there was no internet so I used the telephone to book a room using my credit card and when the date came around we loaded our stuff in the '69 Torino and off we went.

It was winter time but the weather was fair when we left. We drove about 100 miles when it started to rain a little, as we continued to drive the rain turned to freezing rain then into wet heavy snow. The next hundred miles were kinda bad but still not bad.

The last 60 or so miles were very bad but we finally made it to the motel and checked in. By now there was a full fledged blizzard going on outside. We didn't care to much because we had made it with plenty of time to go to the show so we went to some steak chain and had a nice dinner.

After dinner we went to the arena but the ticket dude thought the show was going to be canceled because of the storm. He told us we could hang around to find out if we wanted so we did.

There really weren't a lot of people there, the place could hold thousands but there were only a little over 100 so it looked like a very small crowd. There were many delays but finally one of the local bands came out and started to play.

They actually were not too bad. They played their set then there was supposed to be another band play but they couldn't make it because of the storm.

After about half an hour the original band came back out and played another set. When they were done Joe's manager or someone came out and said Joe had taken sick and the concert was canceled after all.

Naturally everyone wanted their money back.

Now this girl I brought with me turned out to be a walking pharmacy so she was so high she could have gone duck hunting with a rake.

With the unruly mob screaming for the show they paid for or their money back finally Joe wobbled out and started 'singing' he made it through two songs but it was obvious to me that he was also very stoned.

He couldn't remember the words and you could see that his band was pretty upset with him. He was stumbling around the stage so finally someone brought him a stool to sit on. I think he passed out and just laid there for a while. Someone finally came out to check if he was dead or something and the band started unplugging their instruments and leaving the stage.

Joe managed to sit up a little then blew lunch all over the stage and the dude that was trying to help him
the crowd went nuts booing and hissing. Eventually some guys came out with a stretcher and hauled him off.

The manager of the arena came out and said everyone would get at least a partial refund and the crowd went nuts yelling “We want our money back”

after a while the only band that had made it to the place came out and their lead man started making jokes about how poor ol Joe just couldn't hold his liqueur and played another set.

By now I could have slid the chick I brought along under most any door. She was that limp and crying because her favorite singer was sick. I was discussed with it all.

Finally we left to go back to the motel. Like I said, I had been promised many favors if I would just take her to the show. And I could have taken what I wanted but somehow didn't think it would be much fun with her in the condition she was in.

I'm not sure what all controlled substances she might have ingested but I did know she had had a whole lot of Jack Daniels and probably enough beer to float a battle ship.

Not too long after we got to the room she did a real good impression of what Joe had done at the concert. I held her hand and tried to clean her up between bouts of projectile vomiting.

The next day she was very apologetic and stuff but somehow the whole mood was just gone for me.

Around noon the state declared that the roads were safe for travel again so we just went home with promises that never did get fulfilled.

I have really disliked Joe C0cker ever since.

There are similar stories like that for Sly Stone, Steven Tyler, Chaka Kahn and numerous others that were too sick/high/whatever to perform. Even Ray Charles. Sadly, it goes with the territory. Many of them seemed to have the notion that they had to be high to perform.

After such a promising start, it just faded... Sorry, man,

"You can leave your hat on" was standard fare back in the mid-80s, and I loved Joe, though I never got to see him - in any condition. My brother did, and shouted out something about whether he knew "any Zeppelin songs" during a quiet period in the show. He almost got tossed. Had a MI State Trooper at the end of aisle for quite a while...

Still makes me laugh. The memories are enough to make you smile...

His ballads (for "Officer and a Gentleman") were awesome, but his own stuff, like "Unchain my Heart" definitely kept him relevant for a long time. They don't make 'em like that any more, for sure. RIP, Joe!
