Removing Aftermarket Sunroof?
Removing Aftermarket Sunroof?
Ok, this if for my Lumina, hence it's in Off-Topic...
Back when I got the car I had an aftermarket flip-up sunroof installed in the Lumina from Ziebart. It came with a lifetime warranty, but of course no paperwork to prove it... Well it's leaking now. I'm figuring the caulking or whatever you want to call it around it has worn out. Since there's no drain tubes, it depends on a water tight seal to keep it dry. Well since it's dried up it's getting in in the front corner and soaking through the headliner.
I was wondering if anyone knows what is involved in removing such a sunroof? When I pull the headliner down I can see little screws all around the base of the sunroof... Would I just unscrew them all and push the sunroof base out of the roof of the car? All I need to do is remove it so I can put some type of caulking under it again so it's fresh, but I have no idea if that's how you take it out or what. I don't really want to break it, so that's why I'm asking.

You figured it out, undue the screws and gently push the sunroof up from underneath, be prepared to find rust once its out, unless they primed and painted the cut edges of the roof. The glass is usually removable from "flip up" style sunroofs by removing the nuts/bolts at the front edge of the glass, be careful of course.
Kid.....
The only thing I would caution is.......
What are the screws driven into. It can't be the roof. The metal is to thin, probably something like .020, and I doubt if the roof is double paneled. But maybe. Unless of course, the screws are just "locking" screws that are gripping the sheet metal.
I had the headliner panel down and replaced the material on my Lumina many years ago. But alas, my memory is bad and can't remember what it looked like.

It could be a two piece frame and the lower screws thread into the upper piece (or read that as inside piece/outside piece) Either way the "gunk" that you want to replace is likely still gluing the contraption together and to the roof.... may not be an easy removal. Make sure you don't bend/tweak the frame or it will never seal properly.
Good luck and go easy.

I'm guessing it's a two piece frame, because the screws don't point up, they point sideways (if that makes sense) like facing the front and rear of the car. It can't be anything too difficult I wouldn't think since the car didn't have a sunroof and they just put one in in an hour or two....
I mean, it leaks now. How much more could I screw it up?
