The best defense is to be in the right lane long before you actually have to exit. Of course, that puts you into the position of being able to cut off the driver who is going to get ahead of you to exit from the right lane.

I was about 3/4 to 1 mile before the exit with moderate to heavy traffic doing about 40mph. I could not slow down too much with the cars behind me and there was no place to move over behind the car that pulled into the space I could have merged into. I usually let my turn signal flash 3-4 times before starting to move over. At the second flash he/she surged forward. I await your driving lesson 102.
