They're probably for rescue if cutting the pilot & copilot out was needed.

You Air Force guys think those planes are so great...what good is it if it can't hover? Great shots Goose,keep doing the great job that you are doing.My hat is off to you and everyone in uniform these days.By the way,did you know that the Air Force is training helicopter pilots here at Ft.Rucker? They are flying new Hueys.That great old aircraft just keeps going and going.

That's exactly what those markings are for. The Crash/Rescue crews get right on top and cut the crew out. Cost of plane....$$$$$$$$$ Cost of life...PRICELESS.
