2.2 interchange

I was wondering if what 2.2's would interchange with my 08 HHR?? After doing a timing set swap my motor is still making a racket, so I either hit a valve or something in the bottom end. I have access to a 2004 Saturn ion with a 2.2. Can I swap all my stuff over to that?? Thank in advance.

Probably not. It is always best to get one from the same year and model.

However; the guy at the counter of your local junkyard could tell you in a flash.

The used engine I had put in my 2008 came from a 2006 "something". Remember when you change engines there is computer work that needs to be done, at the least the crank position sensor needs to be learned.

The 04 will have a power steering pump protruding from the trans end of the engine, it won't have the correct crank sensor or the cam solenoids if your 2.2 has VVT

Well that all sucks. I guess I may just pull my head off and go from there. If the head is good and it's the bottom end I may be parting it out.

Tear it down and have a look! It might be something in the head or timing chain or the balance shaft chain , did you replace the chains only? The water pump? The sprockets? All the guides and tensioners?

New timing chain, guides, sprockets, cam bolts, crank bolt, tensioner, water pump, new gaskets, new plugs. I think the noise is the top end, passenger side. I may pull the head off over the next day or 2, no 100+ heat indexes till Saturday lol. I do have a CEL though when I started it.

Anyone know if the 2004 ion head will interchange? My HHR is an 08, no vvt.

Doubt it. Design changes were made after 2006.

You could contact your local pick a part and ask them if their Hollander parts inter change books confirm yes or no.
As for the bolt pattern, oil passages, water jackets lining up, it is plausible but valve to piston clearance is questionable, the '04 cams would probably be a different grind on the lobes and the cam bearing size may be different also.
