I'm getting super frustrated with my 2010 LT. I can't -for the life of me- seem to find the right tools to get the housing off the stupid freaking oil filter. I'm using a ratchet with a 10 inch extension with a 32mm socket. I kind of feel like the socket that I'm using is to tall to fit properly over the nut.
Do I just need to find a shorter one? Am I on the right track? Where did you find your socket?

 

Most of your friendly auto parts stores carry a short 32mm socket made specifically for this purpose. They usually resemble an impact socket, but are NOT made for that purpose. Depending on the store, they range in price from $7 - $10. Check in the section with the oil filter wrenches, or ask the counter person.

 

^^^ what he said...... I got mine at Advance Auto Parts, labeled as a Cobalt/Ecotec 2.2L tool.

 

Lisle Part number 14700. You can get them on many tool sites and auto parts stores. They look like this:

Be sure to put the socket onto the filter cover FIRST, then put the extension into the socket. I use a 12" extension and it's a snap...

 

I use my special socket and a floppy end long extention. Piece of cake.

Also the tip about putting the socket on, then the extension: genius. Pure genius.

 

I just took my regular socket and chopped off about 1/4". Fits perfectly now.

Don't strip the cap, it's only plastic.
