Checking Oil Level on 5 Speed Manual Transmission

I have searched but all I find is automatic transmission threads. I need to check the oil level in my 5 speed manual transmission (NOT automatic). Not sure where or if it has a plug like the old school transmissions. I see a plug on the driver side just to the right of the axle that would need a hex wrench to remove. Is that where the level should be checked and or fluid added? I have some oil residue (not to excessive but some present) around the axle shafts and starting to hear a very slight whine so I was wanting to make sure my fluid level is not getting to low. Thanks for any help.
