Clutch

I have an HHR with a spun bearing in the engine, in need of brakes and a clutch. I actually bought it for parts, but it's so clean and low milage, I'm debating putting it back on the road. I called for a clutch assembly and have found prices from $500-1000, just for parts. Does this sound right? I would have thought $300, it does explain why the previous owner sold it as is. Are there any prefer brands of clutches for the HHR?

I had to have my clutch replaced and it cost around $800 OOP including Labor cost.

Yeah, Kev beat me to it, but a clutch replacement will run between $600-$800.

You didn't say whether those were prices for OEM equivalent clutch parts, or performance clutch parts. If it's the former, that's a bit steep. If you're talking the latter, they are still a bit steep, but not hugely out of line.

But if you can spend say $1,500 or so on a good used engine and a clutch job, then you'll have a cheap set of wheels if the rest of it is in good shape.

So far, I've only looked into OE style clutches, they're a complete kit with a new slave, but I was surprised at the price. Even the NAPA counter guy made a comment about them being pricey before he searched it. I can buy a used engine for $250-350 depending on milage, so that's good and I'm hoping to drop the front subframe assembly knowing the clutch needs replacing.

I tried to turn the engine over and it was real sluggish, so I pulled the dip stick only to find it was bone dry. It looks like a lack of maintenance killed this engine, sad, because it's only got 110,000 miles on it.
