Engine Life
i know its not the same but with proper maintenance my mother has a 95 cavalier with over 300,000 miles on it and the only thing that we really had to replace was the alt, water pump, an injector, and the timing belt.
Most of todays engines will more than out last the cars they are in. It is not unheard of for many of GM's engines to go 300,000-600,000 with no majore issues.
The problem is not all engines are taken care of and most of todays cars become too expensive to fix after 10 years old and high miles. Often the cost can out reach the value of some of the cars.

this is 100% true i had a 96 passat that i bought used and the previouse owner took no car of it when i changed the oil for the first time it came out black and extremely chunky a couple of weeks later a piston siezed and it only had 80,000 miles on it and from that day forth i only by gm i replaced the motor from my trans am with 180,000 miles on it and i only replaced it cause i wanted to get more power, but it ran like the first day i bought it.
I just got my son a 97 Astro with 174,000 miles. A tuneup and it runs like new....
And it's all about the PM. Change the fluids regularly (including coolant!), and if maintenance schedule says change the cam belt, do it and quick.
How about oil change intervals? I am still a little leery of the DIC oil life estimation. I only have had this one Chevy with this feature (it was used, fleet) for 10k (now up to 31k total miles) and that one oil change so far really made me wonder. I am still a fan of 3k oil changes, but maybe I am old in my thinking.

You can change at 3K but you are just wasting good oil and money.
Only if you are in very dirty and very hot conditions do you need to change it more often. The DIC is very on the money and can be trusted as long as someone does not reset it on you.
