I would take the accessory drive belt off and crank it and see if it still makes the noise. If it does not then maybe alternator or a/c compressor making it or tensioner pulley

It's makeshift can for my overflow for the coolant. That does not have anything to do with the noise. It's all coming directly from the engine it's self.

What was wrong with the original design of the coolant recovery tank? Hard to believe one from a junkyard would cost more than $5.
Has the water pump been replaced? The impeller has been known to disconnect.

The original one on the car was badly damaged and right now its a temp fix till I can find one. The junkyards around me do not have any hhr's at the moment but I have been checking. The pump has not been replaced since I bought it. I do plan to replace it soon though to stay ahead of issues.

FYI. If you end up finding the timing chain needs replacement, then replace the water pump while the engine is apart. The water pump is driven by the 2nd chain (balance shaft chain)
