10W30???
M1 or Royal Purple is your choice.. I prefer M1.

10w30 is not what's recommended, why not use what GM calls for 5w30.

Alex-

Your oil fill cap should have the 5W-30 printed on it also.. Mine does.

Or you could go with the leader in synthetics, I won't mention names. I use 0W-30

I have generally fond that the thin oils like 5W30, 0W30, 5W20 tends to "shoot" out much more so than traditional oil viscosities like 10W30, 20W50 (which, of course, would be inappropriate for our HHR's unless they were well into the 6 digit mileage range and the engine clearances are getting "looser" than they are now).

Great thread!!! Thank you for posting it and for all the info members have supplied. I've built small block Chevy V-8's since the early sixties and this is my first high tech engine (actually my wife's, she has adored the HHR's since '06 and we finally got her one, a 2010 LT, in 09/10. We love it!).
I was somewhat unhappy that none of my sockets worked on the oil filter lid but someone here suggested a Lisle socket which I found at my local CarQuest. Worked lke a dream. We traded a 2000 Toyota C#@$%& for it when the computer went into total failure at 90K miles. My mechanic did want to deal with it due to EPA restrictions and referred us back to the dealer who after a week obviously did not know what to do. My wife said "HHR time" and we did! We've had the HHR almost a year now with NO problems, the Toyota had to go to the dealer 4 times in the first year. My wife's dream car has become our dream car!
Love this site!

Love doing my own even as I get older. Besides saving money I feel good getting my hands on the car and looking it over.
