Well, I know my truck sure is easy. The oil filter and plug are almost next to each other, so you can drain them at the same time, in the same pan. The truck is high enough off the ground, that I can easily crawl under it (even when I was heavier), and still not have a problem.
I'll give the HHR credit though, it is cleaner than the Lumina. That thing has the filter at a 45degree angle, so when you pull it out it spills everywhere!

A standard 32mm socket will not be able to fit onto the oil filter caps on some engines. I bought a standard depth 32mm for my 2.0LNF. You have to put the socket onto the hex first, then put the extension on the socket, but it works just fine.
My son recently changed the oil on his new '09 Cobalt for the 1st time and there was no way to get the 32mm socket onto the 2.2LAP. Because we were already in the middle of the stream, we had no choice but to carefully do it hack style with channel-locks, but decided that this cannot be the norm. We didn't marr the cap, but just the same, we like to do things properly.
Some HHRs may have the same problem.
We have since picked up a Lisle P/N: 14700 Desc: Oil Filter Wrench for GM2.2L. It was under $7. It is lower in profile and fits on easily.

I change my oil at home, and I'll tell you the HHR is the easiest car I have ever changed the oil on. First off you need a 1 1/4 inch socket, 6 inch extension, and a 15mm socket. You'll want to remove the filter before draining the oil. As you remove the cap for the filter housing (on the front of the engine), you'll need to break it loose and then take it the rest of the way off by hand, as the socket will become lodged and you won't be able to remove the cap. The filter is snapped on the cap. Then just drain your oil, and fill er up and your done. I can easily reach the plug without raising the car, which is a bonus. Good luck and enjoy your new HHR!

Glad you found that wrench for the oil filter cap. I've been changing my Cavalier for 7 years which has the same/similar Ecotec engine. The socket is a little tight on the Cavalier but the HHR is impossible to use the same socket. I'll be buying one of those Lisle 14700 for the HHR. Thanks

While we're at it, can anybody quote the instructions on resetting the oil change light? I have an '08 SS.... haven't been able to find my owners manual. The "key on - depress the pedal 3X" doesn't seem to work. I thought it involved the buttons only. Thanks!
