If and when you do take the panel off use a water resistant silicone lubricant.
I have had a lot of luck with this product.

This has gotten worse on newer vehicles. Lots of warranty that could be avoided by correcting a low-voltage condition. Auxiliary batteries are making it worse. They are hooked up in parallel, and all kinds of scenarios unfold.

Not gonna spill corporate pains, but this one is becoming gigantic at FCA. Don't think we are alone, either...
