fuel door design flaw?
I tried to siphon out some bad gas once, but after fighting with it for half an hour I gave up. I would expect a common theif to have less patients tho. Ended up disconnecting the filler hose down at the tank and draining it there. You can rest assured that your gas is relatively safe in it's tank
I would much rather someone siphon gas out of my tank because I don't have a locking gas cap than have someone put a hole in the bottom of the tank because I do. At most a tank of gas is $60. I imagine a new fuel tank would be a few hundred dollars. I've never had a problem with "not having" a locking gas cap/door. I guess it's a matter of opinion.
Because I park in a large multi-floored facility when I'm at my office in Charlotte, I use locking caps on everything more for the prevention of vandalism. Despite the security patrols in the garage and the surveillance cameras everywhere, we had some instances last fall where vehicles got "sugared" or had other contaminants poured into their tanks.
My assigned space is right in front of a camera and according to the guys in the guard shack/room, they spend many an afternoon staring at Paddy/Boo Boo/The Spousemobile....etc. My "space mates" are a fellow lawyer with a Bentley Continental on the right, and a Bank of America big wig with a Z-06 Corvette on the left....you can imagine how small and "cheap" an HHR looks parked between that pair.

Not so much worried about stealing fuel, more worried about what some kid might dump in the tank. Already had wifes center caps stolen off her cobalt in front of the house, and also have had neighbors cars "looked through" because the doors were unlocked. I even caught 2 young girls in the summer during the day try to open vehicles up and down my block. "tested" the doors by making believe one of them had to tie their shoe-as they were getting into "shoe tying position" she grabbed the door handle to see if it would open. Did this on several cars. Called the cops on them but don't know what happened after that.
They needed a beating as well as the parents that spawned them.
We work hard for what little we have but would never think of doing s--t like that.

I believe the OP isn't happy with the fuel door's ummm...."open door policy", but if someone wants to steal gasoline from your vehicle, they'll get a fuel door with an inside release open. Locking gas caps help, but last year we had problems in Charlotte with people crawling under vehicles and drilling into the gas tank to steal the fuel, if a bad guy wants something badly enough...they'll get it.
That's precisely my reason for question. It doesn't fit his "style" so it's a FLAW.
I like the fuel door.. No flaw..
However being formerly from the sunshine state
, we have lock caps on our rides, & continue that tradition..
Fla at one time had a rash of scum bags dumping junk in gas tanks of vehicles that were well cared for, & /or modded up....

The flaw is how the leash for the gas cap occasionally catches itself on the hooks on the inside of the door while it's closed, making it very hard to open...unless you have tiny hands.
That's a design flaw.
That's a design flaw.
Thiefs don't care what sort of damage they might do if they want your gas. Installing a locking gas cap is like locking a soft top jeep with the soft doors......
