i then moved the clips to the opposite of where they were, 9 inches in and hooked them in the 3rd holes down to make the top line up
after i had it in place and flat against the opening in the grille, i laid my hands flat against the mesh and gently used my fingers to bend the end of the mesh over the bottom of the opening to make it lay flat against it. took some dikes and cut lil lines where the bolts and corners were so the sides laid flat around the opening as well.
this way it looks custom fit
Hey cj thanks for the mod idea
I found mine at Menards. And the whole process only took about 30 min.
Just wondering what everyone thinks of the pic. I am not sure if I am going to leave it this way or not. I am open to suggestions. I just painted the whole thing black except for the HHR part. Still more touch up but you get the idea.

Good question and I was not clear on this.
CJ if I am reading your reply correctly you actually did not flatten the mesh itself, but just bent it so the curvature for its intended rain gutter purpose was removed? That was what I thought you had done, not made the hole mesh thing flat by pounding the poo out of it.

thank you CJ and everyone else for this mod... i went with a smaller mesh that you buy on a roll, i now have 20 feet left, so i have many lower grills that i can make...

this took me and my buddy just under a hour to do... not sure if i clipped it right but it is on there tight..

he does have 3 clips attached to the bottom holding the mesh there i assume
that might raise it
here is a pic of mine. i only put clips on the top and wrapped it around the bottom.
