Painting OEM Hubcaps
Painting OEM Hubcaps
Has anyone ever painted their hubcaps? I sure could use some input on this. If there is a thread sorry for this post please point me in right direction. Very wary of doing this mod. Not really good with paint. I have a blackout theme going with my car i took the hubcaps to see the metal 5 star wheels underneath. I like the black look just not how raw my wheels look without hubcaps on.
If you can handle using spray paint its relatively easy. the way i did it a few years ago with my cobalt is simple and lasted until i traded it in. i would clean them good 1st. after a good wash, i would use parts cleaner or something to that effect to remove any tire shine oils or road grime. then use a scotch brite pad to scuff up the surface so the paint will stick. i used like four coats of flat black spray paint on mine and then two coats of clear coat. i waited about 20 minutes between coats. then let them dry for a day or so and you should be good to go. have some paint thinner around too, incase you start and dont like what youve done. then you can clean them off and start over. Good Luck
have you concidered painting the black five spoke rims the colour you want to see how this looks and then the hub caps if you want , my steel rims were chipped and rusty so I painted them and stopped ther as I liked this look, just a thought!
go to a home depot if you have one near you.or any home center. they have this spray can its called "plasti dip" all you have to do is use wheel cleaner on the caps, hose them off.let them dry and spray it on. now onto the good part of the plasti dip.if you dont like it, you can peel it right off. also you can get an ahesion promotor to make it more gloss since just the plasti dip can will make it a flat black.
if you dont want that.clean them.scuff them up with some fine sand paper.reclean them(make sure you're wearing clean gloves this whole time) get some plastic primer and spray a 2-3 coats of that. once that is fully dry. either take some rustoleum paint or some plastic paint and spray a few coats on there.now i dont do clear coats when i just rattle can paint.i dont have chipping problems.but some people like to clear them as well it just seems to get more orange peel when you clear them.

to the forum justaddmayo! If you're wanting to repaint your stock steel rims black like they were when new, head to your auto parts store or hardware store and get some gloss or semi gloss black wheel paint in a spray can.
Clean your rims thoroughly and lightly sand any rusty areas, then mask off the tires. Follow the directions on the paint, give 'em at least two good coats, then stand back to admire your work.
Take your time and its a piece of cake.
Thank you
