Hey y'all. Got got some running boards from the junk yard. They are pretty good condition, should clean up nice. I'm repainting them.
2 of the 6 brackets were bent and I just want to replace them instead of bending them back. Only problem is I can't find them online anywhere. Not even a picture. They are the type that mount to the frame with 2 bolts and then another under the car with the single bolt plate. They mount the running board itself with 2 bolts as well.
Secondly, I ripped the black rubber padding on the first one off and ripped ALL the fasteners out (luckily I saved the second one). How can I attach it to the plastic? Superglue? Gorilla glue? I don't want to buy a new one. I'm thinking 2 small bolts with fender washers just for safety.
Lastly, I'm using 180 grit to scuff them up. Should I finish with 600 or so before priming? I felt kinda bad cause they were actually really decent but I need them white.
Also, I forgot how easy plastic prep is! Took me about 20 minutes and I have nearly the whole first one done
Sand them in steps of finer grit, up to 400 grit, ensure they are smooth, prime them with a flexible etching primer, sand with 600 and then apply a coat or two of primer, then colour and clear coat. For white apply four or five colour coats.
spray a lite layer each coat , wait 20 minutes or what ever the paint company suggests, and spray another lite coat, to avoid runs Osage in the paint. Let the paint fully cure for a couple of days.
Prep is everything. 220 before priming. 600 wet before paint. Run your hand over every inch of the surface and see if you can feel imperfections, old paint edges, etc. If so sand those areas again and re-prime. How are you painting them? Do you have a compressor and a gun or are you using spray cans?

Outside with high wind, spray can. 3 coats of plastic primer. 1.5 cans. Came out really good. Tried to wetsand with 1000 grit but I dont think I'm doing it right. Does water need to be running the whole time? Never wet sanded before. It was nice and hot out the last few days.
I did 180 and got all shiny red paint off. Then clear coat. Then I sanded a little with 600 then another clear coat then same thing again. Then I tried 1000 wet but again I don't think I did it right. But it looks good on the car. Can't even see the damage. I almost want to clear this but I think I'll at least try to paint match a few coats then clear as suggested.
I was able to reshape the existing brackets with a vice and some pliers. PERFECT FIT! I thought I was going to have to adjust the brackets but it fits so good.
Sanding and priming was so easy that the hard part is going to be fabricating a mount for the led strip I want to install under the running boards haha
